To 'Do' or not to 'Do'... leaves you 'Dew'y-eyed

Weird Hairstyle, Punk Accents, Fish Faces, Adventure Gear - All this time you thought that was possible only in the US of A. Well, Hell no! Welcome to our very own India, and welcome to the world of cut-throat competition!

The original soft drink commercial was to launch a drink in order to make inroads into the sweetened aerated water segment, which was monopolised by Sprite after the sudden ’disappearance’ of the Cadbury-Schweppes Product, ’Canada Dry’. 7up too had receded into some sort of an oblivion and thus Sprite took up the entire market. The launch of Pepsico’s product in the same segment was aimed at breaking Sprite’s monopoly. Their initial ads too were quite interesting until - Sprite responded with its usual in-the-face campaigns.

Four modern day teenagers with a tremendous zest and passion for adventure sports are reduced to punk-looking, weird-hairdo-sporting city-slickers while the ’Gyaan guy’ sits serenely sipping his drink, even as they fall from the heavens (literally). Their energetic enthusiasm for doing the ’do’ is cut short by the shop owner, who has no idea as to what they are talking about and he, in his ignorance, directs them to a bush, interpreting the ’do’ as the ’loo’ in vernac!

Technically...

The ad scores high on the comedy meter and some great camera work ensures that the spoof looks like a spoof! The Gyaan guy does his job well to a good extent and the four ’spoofo’s too look quite close to (but not exactly as) their originals! Sprite has a history of spoofing rival companies campaigns and responding to spoofs of their spoof by creating better and better spoofs each time they strain-their-brain.

And the results are...

Sprite definitely gets a ’Thum(b)s-up’ for their excellent campaign and proving why they are still the number one in spoof-ads and parodies. The other product is not half-as-bad as the guys at Sprite would make you believe. But, what the heck! Jo chaaho ho jaaye ...Enjoy!
