Review : There is an old saying about squash You dont have to play squash to be fit, you have to be fit to play squash. This saying is more than enough to know how demanding squash is both mentally and physically. The game is addictive and hard to master. It needs a lot of brains to make the opponent run around on the court and reflexes like cheetah to paly your shorts. A newcomer might feel thats its an easy game. After all you have a wall in the front and you just have to swing your racket hard so that the ball reaches the wall.
Well, it needs a lot of control also to place the ball where you want it(where your opponent is not!). It can be practised solo also. Solo drills are necessary to become an expert in squash. Before a game you need to warm up properly. Streaching before a game is a must in squash. running around in the court needs a lot of squash stamina that will come only if you run around in court. I know people who can run 10 kilometers in a strech but cant play to thier potential whcile playing 2nd or 3rd game of squash !!!
So here are some tips:
1. Develop squash stamina - how ? Go to the court early in the morning when nobody is around and run as you would run while palying the game in the court.
1 hour before palying eat 2 Bananas- why ? Banana will keep you away from cramps
Buy the right kind of racket - Which one ? Head rackets are good enough
Visualize the game before you play it - How ? Dream about playing squash with your fav opponent and the moves that you would make to beat him and then reapeat them on court.
Watch squash videos - Where ? Google it and you will get them.
Read books about squash - Whcih one ? One by Jahagir Khan is good (Learn squash over a weekend)
Tips for playing the game
There is no ACE service in squash so don not waste your time in developing an ACE
Make your opponent runa a lot. If you ONLY hit the ball hard and do not place it its easy for the opponent to lift the ball. Therefore, just before hitting THINK where your opponent is and do not hit there!
You will be able to do nuber 2 if you come back to T (centre of the court) after making your every shot. Remember that needs stamina.
Once you opponent is tierd you will win the games easily. If he has stamina then only way to win is by being consistant which will only come if you do solo drills.
Do light gym and swimming but do not forget to build SQUASH stamina. Now you know how can you becoma a great squash player. I can keep on writing...but more details probably in PART 2...someday !
