I have been Student at this College for 3 years.
It is commonly known as SP College. It was established in 1905 by Annie Besant for
the then ruler of Jammu and Kashmir Shri
Maharaja Pratap Singh. Before Indian
independence, the college was affiliated with University of Punjab and post independence Banaras Hindu University gave affiliation to S.P. college until the University of Kashmir was founded in 1956. It was established in 1905, as an intermediate college by upgrading the
famous Hindu High School, Srinagar. It was the personal effort of notable British Social Reformer and educationist Annie Besant.
College is obviously the oldest and most of the Well known People like PMs , CMs , Berocrates, Reserchers, Administrators have been its alumni. But as the time passed it lost its Fame and glory. When students started moving towards professional courses Academic College like SP College got neglected. Students hardly remain punctual throughout the year. Teaching staff although well qualified are unable to change the students mindset.
Initially it was a coed college then it remained confined to Boys only but Nowadays its CoEd again.
College usually teaches Sciences and IT but nowadays some new courses have been added. Besides UG It also runs PG courses in some subjects ( Environment Sc. , Chemistry )
And it is now part of Cluster University of Kashmir.
Cocurricular activities are also available like cricket, football, volleyball, hockey, table tennis, etc
Infrastructure is quite good every class and every section has a lecture hall. Labs are also well equipped.
