St. Anger
- Metallica
Its the end of an era. An era which began with great splendour and might but slowly led to its own ruin and downfall. It was widely accepted that with St Anger, Metallica would return to their roots - the kind of form they showed the world through Ride The Lightening and ... And Justice For All. But unless the band members have actually forgotten their own roots, they have dreadfully failed to bring back the glory of the past.
I would recommend you to look elsewhere if you want to get some good metal music. Or simply buy the older stuff by Metallica (Master of Puppets or the other two mentioned above). This ones simply not worth its cost.
Most albums usually have a few good moments in them. But Metallica seem adamant to defy this rule. I didnt find a single moment which I can look back and say I really enjoyed. Maybe if I can summon the will I might give it another chance in 6 months or so.
I think what the band really needs to do is take a break and listen to their earlier albums and their newer ones. And if they can, they should also see the change among their fans. No longer will they see many metal fans in their live concerts. Only the people who listen to stuff like Limp Bizkit, Deftones etc... I have nothing against these bands, which are quite good in their own way. But Metallica used to be a band much superior than these and it really is a pity to see the way they are going.
I hate the drums in this album. It seems as if Lars is in desparate need of a new drumset whereas Kirk Hammet whom I would have rated among the top 30 guitarists a few years ago just doesnt play a single solo. James needs to work on his singing a lot if he wants to regain his past glory.
Its tough for me to say that I actually witnessed their past, as I was born in the late 80s. But after Master of Puppets, I had heard all their albums in the order in which it was released and was very dissappointed with their downfall. I wont be reviewing each song individually as Im sure I wold run out of adjectives and theres no point in rating them individually either. They all deserve less than a star. Maybe I would have given 1 1/2 stars to Invisible Kid due to its ok sort of guitar riff if not for the disgusting guitar work towards the end.

Its the end of an era. I cant see any signs of Metallica returning to their roots any more. And thats the bottom line.
