INTRODUCTION
What can you say about a fast-food restaurant that is hale and hearty and at the same time amazingly healthy? (Read from a proper outlet). That it has given a normal guy a heroic status and his 15-minutes of fame? And it has rose so much in stature that it has become on of the most sought out franchises in the world? That it gives at an average, US$100K as a minimum profit to most of these franchises? At the same time giving a strong and healthy meal (well, at least for the most part), to most of its thankful customers looking forward to have a sumptuous and healthy meal at a low cost? Well, I can go on and on. Subway stands out. It has helped me in many ways too. Like two sides of the coin, subway has its fallacies too. That’s the reason I am writing this review within the limit of 8K chars.
Like I always do, let us start with the history of Subway and go on from there.
HISTORY
Fred DeLuca, a 17-year-old college freshman and his family friend Dr. Peter Buck started the first restaurant in 1965 at Bridgeport, Conn., known as Pete’s Super Submarine. It was sold for 49 cents. The founding partners formed Doctor’s Associates Inc. In 1968 they changed the name to “Subway” with their 5th restaurant. It grew up to 200 in 13 years. In 2001 they opened 15000 franchises. With revenue of $5.7 Bn worldwide, this is a force to be reckoned with
A LA CARTE
Ok, what are all the options you have? Subway comes in many varieties and sizes. Some of the main varieties are
====>Subway Classics – Namely Cold cut Trio, Italian BMT, Meatball, Seafood and Crab, Steak and Cheese, Melt and Tuna
====>Seven under Six – This is the most popular one with Roasted Chicken Breast, Ham, Subway Club, Ham, Turkey and Veggie Delite( I go for Veggie all the times)
====>Subway Select
====>Subway Value Meals and
====>Subway Kids pack
Many of these are made as per the customer’s preference. You can choose and make your own sandwich when a SU(Subway University) graduate makes your meal. You have variety of ingredients to choose from. You have a sense of ownership for your own meal!
They have seasonal offers with new tastes and varieties. They recently introduced “Veggie Max” which has a Veggie Patty for the Vegetarian segment. This is my favorite and have been gobbling and guzzling many of them over the last few months.
Any Sandwich consists of the bread, the main content (such as veggie patty, chicken, turkey, fish etc), Cheese, Vegetables, Condiments. You can choose your own to make it personal.
MY OPINION
I had my first subway sandwich in 1997 when a colleague I work with took me to the nearest subway. Ever since, I have been there hundreds of times. This is the most favorite restaurant chain I frequent the most. Compared to the other major chains such as McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Burger King et al, this stands out for the fulfillment you get via your meal and the varieties available to you. You may say, hey it’s a sandwich that’s all you get. Well, it is a specialty restaurant and you gotta make your own amongst varieties.
If you are a health-conscious person, this may help you in many ways. They have many varieties with calorific value that are less than 6 grams of fat altogether. You can follow the story of Jared.S.Fogle who lost 245 pounds over an year and more by following a rigorous regimen which primarily consisted of Subway meals. This has catapulted Subway to the position it is now.
Subway is getting so popular that the queue you see, during regular lunch hours by itself is a simple tribute for the same.
PROS
====>Healthy and Calorific Meal
====>Made right infront of your eyes
====>Value for the buck spent
====>Many varieties to choose from
====>You get to eat your meal in less than 2 minutes from the time you order (This may vary in India and other places)
====>You make your own choices
====>The Bread and other ingredients are fresh most of the times (Again, it can vary from franchise to franchise)
====>Sometimes you get a free subway upon 7 purchases ( I have done that quite a few times)
====>Multiple, departmental processing to reduce time
====>Variety of condiments to suit your needs
====>Value meal options
====>Many varieties with less than 7g fat.
====>Bread does not contain any animal-products (Except for Honey roasted bread). This has been addressed by subway.
====>No MSG or any such dangerous preservatives
====>Varieties of Bread(!!) to choose from
CONS
====>Most of the vegetables are got in bulk. They may not be fresh, depending upon consumption of the franchise
====>Some places make you wait longer due to the crowd
====>The hygiene of the sandwich makers (Again, depends on the place)
====>Sometimes a vegetarian sandwich can be made after a non-veg one with the same gloves.
====>You have only sandwich to eat (Apart from cookies, salad and chips)
====>The bread can be cold sometimes (Again, depends on the place)
I don’t seem to remember any other cons for this product
CONCLUSION
Going to subway and eating is not just for filling your stomach. It gives you a sense of personal touch, A feeling of being inside a New York city subway and getting healthier. As a Subway veteran, I sincerely advise you to try out for the personal touch, healthiness, dietary reasons and the friendly sandwich makers to help you with.
I Hope you liked the review, comments are welcome.

No man is lonely eating spaghetti; it requires so much attention. -- Christopher Morley
There are people who strictly deprive themselves of each and every eatable, drinkable, and smokable which has in any way acquired a shady reputation. They pay this price for health. And health is all they get for it. How strange it is. It is like paying out your whole fortune for a cow that has gone dry. - Mark Twain
