GRE or CAT.....What ..were you thinking something

As the subject line might get u the jist of this discussion ..the much hyped worry of every single parent , wanting best for his little science-kid..Should he try GRE ’n go abroad  or should he strive for the best B-Schools In India thru’ the CAT exams ?

Well certainly if one is willing to shed a hefty amount and wanting to explore this very beautiful world, at the same time can overcome the emotional string ..the attachment to their parents.. should undoubtedly go in for the GRE ’n this write up for all such dear frenz of mine.

GRE is mainly for applying to the US Universities , thou it is a worldwide excepted standard .Along withit TOEFL , IELTS(For UK Universities) make the thing more complete. GRE has 3 main sections -Verbal , Quantitative and Writing(introduced since October 2002 ).Following the recent change in the current GRE pattern , which includes the removal of Analytical section and the introduction of  Writing Section , majority Indian students have gone cuckoo ...as we asianz are supposed to have better mathematical/analytical skills than the western people..and here in India , Not many people like writing long essays on an extempory ..Thus more or less , the change comes in way too negative for us..thou it is a blessing in disguise for our western counterparts, who tend to have have an edge over us writing in their native lang . But don’t worry , here’s also a catch..Americans r used to slang language..which might not be very helpful fetching more marks over us , where as we can really score by jusst..a mere diligence and honesty on one’s part (Ya ! Always be honest with yourself ) .

For the Verbal Section (30 questions - 30 minutes ), best way to improve ur spoken and written English is by...reading  a lot..ya read whatever comes your way, any subject-pertaining to your interest or otherwise too and ya..keep a pocket dictionary , and try looking in it any new found word or infact to be on a safer side.. all those words which you might’ve heard and used but don’t know the exact meaning n usage of it . Another thing is that you must master te 250-300 High Frequency words outlined and given in any standard book (like the Barrons , Pristons , Kaplans, Petersons or Princeton). This is the only thing you should try to rattofy during your whole preparations .There’s  no point mugging up 3500 words or infact the whole of the dictionary for the same result which may be had just by a mere perseverance and common sense .Also if someone’s interested in starting from the scratch ...go in for ’Word Power Made Easy ’by Norman Lewis’ , where thru its immensely easy and well-planned layout , a person can really get his basics rite and make his fundas strong (this book provides help on ’roots’ in english as well).

Regarding the Quantitative Section(28 questions-45 minutes) , we needn’t worry much .This is one section where we indians score generally 800/800 , the average score being around 750-780... This is because only secondary school level maths is tested(class 9-10) , and as we all know here we are supposed to get grilled preparing for the IITs and other competetive exams ..So this is one section where we tend to have gr8 edge over other international students .Only a maximum of 2 months preparation is sufficient ...that includes just brushing ur basic addition, subr, multi, div skills and just flipping the pages of our old maths text-books..

And now the new section on writing ..as I said earlier there’s no real masterplan to conquer the hill-top .But the same prep as for the Verbal Section will do the trick . In addition, ETS (which conducts the GRE Exams) has released a list of around 200 topics , which might be asked in writing section ..this Section has basically 2 parts -’present your perspective on an issue’-45 minutes , ’Analyse an argument ’-30 minutes .This writing section basically assesses our ability to articulate and support complex ideas and analyse and criticise an argument .The good thing here is that we are assessed on the theme , the view we present , the way we present our ideas , the dimensions we cover on the given perspective ..and not on the grammatical mistakes , and the vocabulary and size of the write up matter .

Finally the web too has certain help to provide ...certain useful sites....
