6th March 1971 is a remarkable day in the history of Indian Cricket . The father figure of Indian cricket made his test debut. He is none other than Sunil Monohar Gavaskar.In his first Caribean tour he made 774 runs in 4 Tests. He made 4 century(Including a double century).
This legendary opener first broken the barrier of 10000 runs and also broken the record of 29 century made by Sir Don.
Sunny Gavaskar really dominated Indian Cricket from 1971 to in his last test at Banglore against Pakistan in 1986-87.He was a complete opening opening batsman and in India who first successfully negotiated any class of fast bowler.He preferred to play within ’’V’’ .He played against Andy Roberts, Malcom Marshal, Joel Garnar, Michael Holding , Hoder with his superb technique . He was the pioneer who proved fast bowler could be hit.He has made 13 Test hundred against West Indies.In his time India won 10 rubber. 4 against England, 2 against West Indies, one each against Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan and Srilanka.
Sunil Gavaskar played 125 Test Maches 214 innings and made 10, 122 runs with average of 51.12 including 34 hundreds.He played significant role to win a test match scoring highest run in fourth innings(102 out of 406/4) and tie test (90 out of 347). He made 221 runs in Oval to draw a test.India made 429/9 at the end.
Gavaskar is still popular after his retirement as TV commentator.
