While I was browsing through MouthShut, I just came across a review on Sunsilk Shampoo. After that I went through all of then one by one. After getting acquainted with the level to which people do trust in such products I thought let me make an effort to make them aware of some hard facts about such products and I started writing a review on Shampoos.
Writing a review on Shampoo was just like writing a review on Cigarettes, The dilemma was what should I say? Are shampoos good? Are shampoos bad?
I think good or bad are very relative terms and it?s more about making a choice of what you want.
So as said in many of the reviews on this site, The ingredients used in Sunsilk Shampoo are Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulphate, GHTC (Conditioner), Fragrance, Heena & Lotus Extracts. Let us try to learn and know more about the composition and effects of these ingredients.
Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulphate
-) This inexpensive detergent is commonly used in cosmetic cleansers, hair shampoos, bath and shower gels, bubble baths, etc. - It is probably the most dangerous ingredient used in skin and hair-care products. In the cleaning industry SLS is used in garage floor cleaners, engine degreasers, car-wash soaps, etc.
-) It is very corrosive and readily attacks greasy surfaces. Research shows that SLS has a degenerative effect on the cell membranes and denatures protein such as in hair or skin. This can damage skin or hair, leading to aged skin and poor hair. SLS can corrode hair follicles and inhibit hair growth, contributing to hair loss. SLS has the potential to cause cataracts (through skin absorption, even without direct eye contact). SLS can denature the protein of the eyes and delay the healing time of the eyes. From skin contact, SLS can be absorbed into your circulation and concentrate in your organs, such as your heart, liver or brain. This is potentially dangerous since SLS is a mutagen, capable of changing the information in the genetic material of your cell and organ.
GHTC (Conditioner) or Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride
-) These chemicals have a positive electrical charge. They contain a quaternary ammonium group and are often called quats. These are used in hair conditioners, but originated from the paper and fabric industries as softeners and anti-static agents. In the long run they cause the hair to become dry and brittle. They are synthetic, irritating, allergenic and toxic, and oral intake of them can be fatal.
Fragrance
-) When the word ?fragrance, ? is written on a shampoo label, it means a synthetic fragrance made chemically using any of over 200 synthetic chemicals. These ?fragrance? chemicals, which can bio-accumulate in your organs, can cause many symptoms, such as headaches, lung problems, skin irritation, dizziness, memory impairment, rash, and more. They are very cheap, toxic imitations of real herbal scents.
Heena & Lotus Extracts
Well have you ever checked how much of these are actually added to the product? Most of the time manufacturers add a lot of chemical essence and a little actual quantity of these natural ingredients to their product, probably enchasing the growing popularity of ?Herbal Products? among the conscious customers
I must say that I have not written all this against this particular brand, it is true for all such products.
While going through some of the reviews on shampoos on MouthShut, I came across some very unfortunate and misleading statements, one of them is quoted below:
?The ingredients used in Sunsilk Shampoo are Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulphate, GHTC (Conditioner), Fragrance, Heena & Lotus Extracts. They have tried to minimize chemicals to a minimum and also used natural products like heena and lotus extracts to make sure that you have soft and silky hair.?
I just wanted to write an eye opener for people who believe like that.
I think that the consumer?s mentality is to go more on the face value of whatever is written rather that looking behind those Sophisticated Chemical Names and figure out the reality.
So my suggestion is Dikhaavo par na jaao ... apni akal lagao ... :)
