Incredible Supermanism

Hollywood’s super director Bryan Singer brings us a dynamic Superman this time with extraordinary designs and effects, who in the past has directed movies like The Usual Suspects, X-Men and X2. This movie is sequel to the 1980’s Superman II and it starts Brandon Routh as Superman, my favorite Kate Bosworth as Louis Lane, the incredible actor Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor and James Marsden as Richard White who is Louis Lane’s fiancé. The movie is produced by the director himself along with Jon Peters and Gilbert Adler.

The story goes like this, Superman Returns after 5 years to Earth after trying to find his planet Krypton which scientist believed that it still exists. Superman marks his return by saving an airplane which was about to crash and in which Louis Lane is also traveling. After his return Superman learns that Louis is now engaged to Richard White and has a son. He also learns that Louis has won Pulitzer Award for her article’Why the World Doesn’t Need Superman’. Superman gets his job back at Daily Planet as Clark Kent.

Another shocker Superman gets after learning that Lex Luthor is been released of the prison. Luthor marries a widow intentionally to get all her fortune he will be using to grow a new landmass in the Northern Atlantic ocean with the help of Kryptonite he stole from a museum and which will eventually result into death of billions. Now while investigating a sudden blackout in the city due to Lex Luthor’s experiment, Louis and her son mistakenly board Luthor’s yacht and are captured. Here Louis learns about the Luthor’s plan of mass destruction and creation of new landmass with the help of Kryptonite. In an attempt to escape Louis is attacked by a Lex’s henchman and is killed by Jason who throws a piano at him revealing that Jason is the son of Superman. Richard comes to rescue Louis and Jason from the sinking yacht but he himself is trapped and latter helped by Superman to survive. Richard, Louis and Jason escape in the plane.

Here Superman has a face off with Lex Luthor on his growing landmass which had material consisting Kryptonite. Superman become weak on the landmass and is beaten and thrown into the ocean. Louis insists Richard to return and save Superman as she knew about landmass plan and Superman’s weakness to Kryptonite. Superman is rescued and eliminates the landmass out of the earth which also leads to Luthor and his wife been stuck on an unknown island somewhere in the ocean.

In the end, Superman recovers from the injury caused by the Kryptonite landmass and returns to visit his son Jason and assures Louis that he will not go away again ever.

The plot is ordinary and what disappoints is the weak antagonist in front of incredible Superman. And when Lex Luthor and Superman both are in the movie they should have had more than face offs but they once get to face each other in the climax. The highlight of the movie is the special effects and set designs which are just remarkable. Beside effects and design, the chemistry and scenes between Louis and Superman is so impeccable. Performances by all the lead is satisfactory especially by Kate Bosworth and Kevin Spacey. The character of Clark Kent was well developed and Brandon Routh should be credited for portraying it flawlessly.

I will go for 3 out of 5 for the movie. And this action-drama is worth a watch and makes you asks for more scenes between Superman and Louis. This movie so far had the best Superman and Louis Lane of all Superman movies. I am definitely looking forward to the next Superman movie.
