Melody of life

Sur is Tanuja Chandra’s first malecentric film after three woman-oriented subjects.

Dushman, her first film was so far her best. But Sur certainly tops that one.

To begin with it is more sensitive, less emotionally hurtful and no violence at all.

Dushman was quite loud but in Sur there are only certain scenes where the characters are really loud.

For instance Divya Dutta in her introduction scene is unnecessarily loud. Although she makes you forget that with her commendable performance in the later scenes in a special appearance.

The film also marks the debut of Lucky Ali. Or so the promos of the film said so. But Lucky made his film debut years ago in his father’s film.

He does come up with a fine performance and is the strength of the film.

And delivers Hindi dialogues with less difficulty inspite of what he went claiming in his interviews.

The debutante Gauri Karnik makes an impression. And more than anything else suits the role to a T.

It would be unfair to compare the film to the Amitabh-Jaya Bachchan starrer Abhimaan which also dealth with insecurity and jealousy.

In this case, Lucky Ali who is a music teacher picks out Gauri who is a choir singer and then can’t cope up with the fact that she is gifted with the talent of music and is better off than her.

He also goes to the extent of stealing her composition and passing it off as his own.

Which is incidentally the best song in the film ...

Aa bhi jaa .... aa bhi jaa ...

ai subah aa bhi jaa .... raat ko kar vida ....

dilruba aa bhi jaa ......

The second half of the film tackles his ego issues and his victory over his jealous side to him being a better teacher.

The film is a musical. Although some songs could have been worked upon better. And why on earth has M M Kreem used acoustic violin when it is such a vital part of the music!

And although Lucky Ali sounds good in the songs Aa bhi jaa and Jaane kya dhoondta hai yeh mera dil .... he really did not need all the songs in the film. He stands out as a better actor in this film than a better singer.

All in all, the film makes for interesting viewing.

Although it ends rather abruptly. Not abrupt in the story-sense but the director could have thought up of a nicer climax.
