Eastbourne: Not Bad At All !

The stereotype that gets banded about seems to be that Eastbourne in County Sussex, England, is a town renowned for being a tad boring and full of geriatrics. However, this is a grossly unfair and untrue piece of inherited wisdom. Eastbourne, with a population not much below 100, 00O, is by no means a small, unimportant, town. Its attractive living environment has meant that the Sussex resort has been able to attract some high-tech companies, as well as relying on the important business of tourism. Weather wise Eastbourne ranks very highly. OK I am not going to exaggerate and suggest the place has sub-tropical weather but it does get more hours of sunshine than most other places in Great Britain.Even the international tennis stars that flock to the pre-Wimbledon tennis tournament at Devonshire Park are often surprised at all the sunshine. Architecturally I would most certainly rank Eastbourne as gracious. It has a lengthy and very elegant promenade replete with gorgeous flowers in bloom. It has some of the best hotels in Sussex and its shopping centre, including the one-stop Arndale Centre, is not bad at all.

The entertainment scene is also good. I have certainly come across some pubs of real character, there are plenty of good eateries and not many tacky joints that are often associated with brasher seaside resorts. I dont know much about the club scene but other reviewers sugggest it is quite reasonable. Aside from the inherent attractions of the town itself, it also makes a good base for touring the many pleasant towns and villages in East Sussex. There is delightful Rye to explore and sedate Bexhill-on-Sea appeals to some. Then there is Hastings and 1066 and all that, and Pevensey Castle. Who can overlook the raunchy, saucy, delights of Brighton nearby.Close to the town too is the wonderful Beachy Head with all those wonderful views, although sadly it is also a famous suicide spot as well. There you have it a short, rather succinct, compendium of just some of the attractions of Sunny Eastbourne, which is a lot more than an ..’’Old People’s Habitat’’.
