Yeh des tujhe bulaye

Swades , one of the most awaited films of last year. The reaction to the film was disappointed, however.

However, I really appreciated the movie. Surprising, isn’t it?

Although, I agree that the movie is basically a documentary fit for physics class, I enjoyed watching the film.

Beware! I’m going to embark on my autobiography now…

I’ll give the critics the fact that the movie is slow. And I’ll give the fans that Shah Rukh didn’t draw gallons of tears from their eyes. However, the movie, in the way, it could, should the usurping emotions of an NRI.

Some come abroad looking for education. Some immigrate for a better life. Some think of a better future for their family. I’ve all these opportunities. I still look to go back.

Laughable? Maybe. Shocking? Unexpected from a person who has largely been brought up outside India? Certainly.

There’s only one nation that I’ve ever known, that I’ve ever loved as my own. And my dream has always been to better my country, to bring people outside to appreciate it. Because, after all, damn it, it’s my country!

“Tujhse zindagi…” Sentimental but true.

Swades managed to make me see myself on screen. It realised my dreams and perhaps the ambitions of other (troubled?!?!?) teenagers, who have a past similar to mine.

Shah Rukh, as Mohan, an NRI returning to India from the US. SRK, playing the role of a non-returning Indian (NRI) did well in the movie. Not an outstanding performance, but certainly good. It was refreshing to see that he has broken the stereotypical role that his fans have come to expect of him. Perhaps that why they didn’t the movie as much as I did.

Gayatri Joshi gives a convincing debut performance, as Geeta. Geeta is the “heroine” in the movie, in the most romantic and fairy-tale sense of the word.

Other cast members did a good job. As a movie, this movie is very musical and just good. Just good. The movie is worth one watch. The dream it talks of spreads through a lifetime.
