One of the best films of 2007

Everyone is entitled to their views and the previous reviewer probably did not like the film, but to denounce this fine film in the manner he did was nothing more than failing to get past his like for the crass cinema that now seems to succeed in India.

This is a warm, poignant, sad, and a simple but marvellous little film about a humble family, a promise kept, a wish fulfilled.  To see such a film these days, in the midst of so called’blockbusters’ that are nothing more than the same idea recycled for the hundredth time, was truly a wonderful feeling and I appalud the filmmakers for daring to make a film that perhaps has it roots more in the films of the fifties rather than in the present.

I am trying hard not to tell you the story as I would rather not spoil the discovery that any viewer shall make if they bothered to watch this film.    All I ask is that they watch it not expecting a romantic melodrama, a comedy, or a message movie. ’Swami’ is none of those.  Instead it is a cleansing of our hearts, minds and feelings - a return to simplicity and form that has long since eluded much of Indian cinema in recent years, bar a few examples.

I urge everyone to watch this film and make up your own minds.  Watch it with a wilingness to give yourself to the emotions and with a view to discovery.
