Making a movie on a sensitive issue is easier
said than done. While some filmmakers mix sensitive with sensational, some mix
it with sleaze. Yet some give us a product that seems just that - a product. A
mechanical version of an attempt at disclosing human emotions. But trust Aamir
Khan to deliver what he says he will. This debut directorial venture of the
exceptional actor is a treat to watch and missing it would be missing out on
something really, really enlightening.
Taaren.touches on the issue of dyslexia, a
slight brain disorder which manifests itself in spelling and reading
difficulties. Ishaan(Darshil) is one such kid who fails to cope up with
the regular standards at school. Despite the numerous complaints and the
worried parents, Ishaan is happy in his world. His world of fish, colours and
dogs.a world which this real competitive world has no interest in. When he is
sent off to boarding school, the condition is much the same. And then enters
the guardian angel who would understand him, who would help him out. Ram
Nikhumbh(Aamir Khan) is an art teacher who soon becomes a part of
Ishaans world of fantasy and colour. In his own innovative and concerned
manner, he brings to the fore how, in the true sense of the word, every child
is "special."
The movie works not because it has glitzy, exotic
locales or a hip hop item number thrown in. It works because it reveals the
psychology of a child like never before. It works because the sequences are
wonderfully shot. The love Ishaan and his Mom share cant help but make the
viewer a part of the narrative. It works also because the performances are par
excellence. Aamir is perfect as always, fitting into the character of Nikhumbh
Sir with an ease that makes you catch your breath. Darshil is a natural talent.
He makes you cry with him, he makes you smile, he gives you goose pimples at
the mere realization of how real the narrative is, how close to the
heart. This is a movie for all parents to help know their child better.
This is a movie for all kids to be encouraged to follow their heart.
Taaren.is a movie for one and all.
Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy have given some soft,
melodious music and the lyrics(Prasoon Joshi) are so apt they drown you in
them. The cinematography is also commendable and the use of colours is
brilliant. Though the film rests on Darshil and Aamirs shoulders, but the
supporting cast has also delivered top notch performances. Tisca Chopra as
Ishaans Mum deserves a special mention. The direction is truly remarkable as
Aamir has clearly worked hard on every frame. The initial reels are as
fascinating as is the smooth transition between paintings and scenes. The art
contest towards the end is such a befitting finish that makes you want to stand
up and applaud.
To point out flaws, if any, one would have to
watch it a second time. Taare Zameen Par lives up to its name. It brings
several stars of magic, exuberance and innocence onto the screen. And simply
for that, the 5 star rating I am giving to this movie seems completely
justified.
