The Taj Mahal- Its the token of love. Ok lets think why/how. Who in this world would ever take pains to build such a big, beautiful and elegant structure like TajMahal ? That too as a Token of love ? Just for remembering your wife ? That too Spending so much of money and Time ?
The love here - It is not the short-lived fascination or fantasy which happens before a marriage that dies out after the birth of two or three children. Its not the feeling you receive when you boy-friend mails you. Its not the joy you receive when she presents you a birthday gift.
It can be more explained with the word Obsession. Its the love deep inside your sub-conscious mind. Not even in the sub-conscious mind. Much more deeper than that. Its when You live for her. You breathe for her. You Sing for her.
If you are working for ATK or E&Y, and if you take two hours of your time in the evening to take her out on your wedding day - Its love. Just love. If you take a holiday on your wedding day and spend your time with her - Its deep/sincere Love. But If you just think of her and her alone - Its obsessive Love. And when you cross the line of Obsession, It becomes Divine. Something that is only imaginable. But seldom practicable.
Any love which results in Consummation - Its not divine. Its tangible. Divine love seldom results in Consummation. Its intangible. For understanding the divine love, we need to be musicians, poets, singers and lovers - all together.
Mumtaz tujhe dekha - Jab Taj Mahal Dekha
Phir aaj ki ankhon se - Guzra hua kal dekha.
Oh Mumtaz! I see you - whenever I see Taj Mahal. Its you. And with Todays old eyes, I see our eternal and nostalgic past. He sings this after the death of his beloved. From inside the prison.
Shah Jahan, As we all know, was incarcerated by his son, Aurengazeb. Upon Shah Jahans request, he was put in a prison from where he could see only the Taj Mahal - Or Mumtaz - to be precise. After her death, He wanted to incarnate (embody) the eternal beauty of Mumtaz. And Taj Mahal was born. Only Taj could do justice to Mumtazs beauty. And only Shah Jahan could perceive her beauty fully.
The song composed in Lalat (Lalit) has all these feelings engraved deeply in it. It has both threevra and Komal Madhaymams. And Another wonder here by Naushad sahab is the transposition he does by taking Komal Ma as Sa. After doing this , when you continue the same lalat with its Original Sa, It becomes shubha - panthuvarali which can invoke the feelings of acute agony or despair. This combo of Lalit (The sharp Kama) with Shuba Panthuvarali (Agony) lifts the song to a new dimension. Hariharanji added his mesmerizing ghazal expertise to it.
Its a divine love. Pure & Unconditional. Have you experienced it ? If not, a part of it could be
