Talaash is a kind of movie which if made in Hollywood would definitely have been nominated for Oscars under some category. It has got amazing storyline, excellent execution and undoubtedly wonderful performance by the actors. If you want to watch something better than mindless love stories and ridiculous fight scenes, this movie is for you. I have started realizing that Aamir and other khans or Akshay Kumar are going in diametrically opposite directions when it comes to choosing films. Every next movie from Akshay is even more ludicrous than his previous one and for Amir, every next movie is even more likeable. Aamir seems to be taking his viewers seriously while choosing his movies. Talaash is a movie which definitely is worth your 300 bucks and 3 hrs.
Talking about the storyline of the movie, it is a suspense thriller. [There are no spoilers so you can continue reading]. Within 2 minutes into a movie a film star dies in an accident under mysterious circumstances. Inspector Shekhawat(Amir khan) starts investigating the case. He finds it difficult to find any clue about the accidental death. On top of it he is fighting with himself in his personal life. It turns out that he has lost his son, who drowned while playing, and feels himself responsible for the incident. After this accident his relationship with his wife(Rani Mukharjee) has become quite cold. Battling at both the fronts, he meets Rosey(Karina Kapoor), a call girl who promises to help him with the case as well as with the happiness he seems to have lost in life. Story goes on and while following the clues one after another Shekhawat makes gradual progress in the case, though quite slowly. Meanwhile his wife starts meeting one of their neighbors who seems to help her talk to her dead son. When Shekhawat comes to know about this, all hell breaks loose and for this foolishness he reprimands his wife severely which strains their relationship even more. The story takes further twists and turns and ends into something quite surprising, connecting all the dots.
The biggest strength of the movie is its storyline. The story starts within minutes you are into the movie. And the pace of the story is quite good. It has been executed impeccably. Songs are also good. The actors have performed well. Aamir in his serious role has done full justice to his character. Rani Mukharjee, Kareena, Nawajuddin all have done their job prefectly. There are some wonderful moments in the movie. I particularly liked the scene when Aamir calls his team and admonishes them for divulging the case details to media and another one when Aamir dreams about what he could have done to save his son’s life. There are many such nicely captured moments.
I have to think hard if I want to write the negatives of the movie. At a few places one might feel that the movie goes a bit slow. The chemistry between Aamir and Kareena has been stretched to some extent. Also I could not understand one of the scenes. Once it has been shown that Shashi(the pimp) takes kareena to one of the clients. I could not get answer to the ambiguity raised by this scene.
Overall, It’s a blink-your-eye-and-you-miss-something kind of movie. You are always at the edge of your seat guessing what’s going to happen next. There are many scenes which make you ask why was it there? But at the end everything connects perfectly. You get answer to every question. There are quite a few movies with this concept and almost all of them have been liked by the viewers, in Bollywood as well as in Hollywood. Though it’s not a perfect movie and you can always find some flaws in the movie, overall it’s a must watch for every serious movie-goer.
