Imtiaz Ali, is one of the few directors who made his own mark by molding usual stories into novel movies and his latest creation starring Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone stays nowhere away. This time too, he deals with human emotions and shows why one’s self satisfaction is greater than any materialistic pleasures. We live in a society where we are compelled to conform to the standards established by it, by which, our lives are being type casted.
Though our inner minds thrive to do something novel, the fear of breakage to security and social status keep those ideas away. Is such a life self satisfactory? Is it a robotic life that we are destined to live or that of a free spirit? Imtiaz Ali once again takes a deep into this subject with high flavors of emotion! This time, we have a boy, highly inquisitive about stories, who forms a world for himself out of those. The boy collects coins and robs father’s pocket to hear stories from an old story teller, who is confused about the name of the stories he tell, because everywhere, the stories remain same and only characters differ!
This childhood segment of protagonist is a point where Imtiaz Ali gives the viewers a brief about the type of movie they are introduced into. Though the movie starts like any other story, once the characters hook, we realize that, this is not just another candy floss love story with some sentiment for the sake of climax union; Tamasha is something bigger, where emotions are of higher standards covenant with the flamboyance of free spirit. The movie’s tag line quotes, “Why the same story?” and Ali means it, expressing feelings of characters appropriately in a non linear love story; a point where love becomes something more than a product of attraction, a tool for self realization! Though the Don and Mona Darling episodes don’t impress to great levels, the gaffe go unnoticed for the proceeding serious moments. Imtiaz Ali continues his journey of finding one’s inner dreams and this time the ride gets experimental offering a kind of complexity to definition of characters, happenings and presentation. The behavior of characters is what highlight the novelty factor here; the way Ved and Tara behave was realistic for the situations shown. The unconventional plot turns and emotional appeal added extra flavor to the exceptional making. The sequences of Ved’s conversation with his family, certain scenes between Ved& Tara and the climax sequences were a delight to the viewer’s soul where pure drama shakes hand with emotions.
AR Rahman’s expressive music enhances the delightfulness of drama; the songs were of superior quality in a flow with the happenings and the original score was impeccably heartwarming. The tunes will remind the viewer, the splendor of finding oneself even after watching the film! The Director of Photography, Ravi Varman has some great frames for the movie to boast about its visual brilliance, the beauty of Corsica was well captured and certain night shots were of superior quality. The production values were rich. Even if the plot has content, it requires quite brilliance to present it soulfully on screen and, Imtiaz Ali excel in making Tamasha such an experience. At the acting side, Deepika Padukone has a lot to do in the first half, presenting emotions aptly; especially the scenes of leaving Corsica and the lament scene before ‘Agar Tum Saath Ho’ song were of great intensity. But man of the show was Ranbir Kapoor, the actor going through a bad phase of his career(read, box office not selection of movies), is back with yet another memorable character, Ved. While he appeals with style in the former half, I was unable to take eyes off screen for the brilliance he exposed in the latter half. The viewer’s heart gleams along with his character in the ending scenes. The robotic life of a workaholic dedicated to company, with a set of feelings about to break was greatly acted by him, the sequences of emotional breakdown and happiness felt close to heart. Other notable performances were from the childhood Ved, old story teller and Ved’s father. The boy Ved was too appealing that the viewer could hook to the character from the start itself.
Overall, ‘Tamasha’ is a soulful cinematic experience that compels us to live self satisfactorily! If you admire good movies and have the sense to appreciate the flamboyance of free spirit, then, Tamasha is for you!
