TATA Indicom - STAY AWAY

I read in the papers today that a consumer court fined TATA Indicom 45000 for harassing a customer to pay an incorrect bill. It brought back memories of my experience with TATA Indicom and would like to share it.

I was a TATA Indicom subscriber while staying in Delhi and all was hunky dory. Net was slow but consistent so it served my purpose. I decided to shift toGurgaon in Jan’06 and then my nightmare started. I asked the customer care the process to disconnect my phone and was told it would be a 3 day process during which they would come to my house and collect the instrument after I paid my dues. When I actually called a week before shifting, the new executive told me that the process of disconnection will take about 45 days and I would have to personally come to their office to submit the instrument. On insistence they promised to come to my office in Gurgaon to complete the formalities.

Thereafter no one came to my office. The only time I got calls from them was to ask for payments for the bills generated for the months of Jan and Feb when the phone was not in use. Thereafter they disconnected my phone for Non-Payment of bills and kept hounding me for the dues. I insisted that I have not used the phone and had sent a fax to their office for disconnection early in January fell on deaf ears. I even requested them to adjust the unjustly billed amount against the security deposit that I had given to them but that too did not cut much ice and I kept getting calls for payments.

Things then took a turn for the worse. One day I got a call saying the person is calling from NOIDA police station and TATA has registered a case against me for non-payment. I was very sure that the call was a hoax but a common man always tries to shy away from Police and that is what I did. I made the payment of Rs. 1200/-, charges for TATA Indicom not disconnecting my phone on time. I thought that should settle it but a few days later I got another call sayign she is calling from some lawers office and TATA has registered a case in some court for not returning its property (the instrument). I was asked to do the same within 24 hours to stop the case else I will get summons from the court. Again a hoax but something I could not take any chances with. I scampered around making calls and got in touch with an agency that collects instruments on TATA Indicom’s behalf. On request they sent a person the next day to my office and I handed over the instrumetn after taking a duly signed reciept from them.

Thankfully that is the last I heard from TATA Indicom and have vowed to never use a Telecom product from TATA and if possible no product at all that requires after sales service.
