Though quite a number of english movies turned out entertaining for me, there are a few that have enriched me as a person. I could not break them into the best 10... So I have made a heavy list.
The top ones are......
A Beautiful Mind: A beautiful mind and a loving wife to bring it to sanity
Basic Instinct: What to say about this movie. Devilish human psyche to the forefront. ’’somebody has to die, somebody always does’’
Benhur: A classic, possibly the best movie on christ, and his face is not shown all along
Braveheart: About human dignity and a hero’s courage.
Forrest Gump: Another great classic. It is just the experience of the movie that is great. What else can you say. There are no words to describe the embedded american politics snippets that are seen by Forrest on TV in the movie. There are simply too many undercurrents in the movie.
Gandhi: ’’Future generations will wonder that such a person ever walked on earth’’ Einstein said. Truly inspiring movie.
Gladiator: A revenge story, gory scenes. It is just the gore and the reconstruction of glory of ancient rome that will keep you occupied.
Godfather 2: All say this one is better than the first. I agree. About the sicilian mafia and relationships
Life is beautiful: It surely is. Should I call it comedy or a tragedy. It moves from one to another. The best holocaust movie
Mememto: The best editing possible. It is all there. Creates the effect of a person with short term memory very nicely
Notting Hill: Beautiful relationship movie, of a down to earth Hollywood star and a simple man
Rashomon: Not a Hollywood stuff, but I loved this Kurusawa movie. Searching inside a human spirit
Schindler’s List: Conversion of a man and Holocaust. Highly disturbing.
Shawshank’s redemption: Great escape story of a genius from a brutal system.
Sixth Sense: A quite different story from person of Indian origin.
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon: A Taiwan production. A great movie. I would say it the modern Ramayan.
These are the ones which are not that great. Some of them are just not meant to be in my hall of fame as they are plain entertainment, other might have missed it by a whisker.
A Road to Eldorado: Beautiful story of friends. Friends dont say goodbye
Entrapment: Seductive drama of 2 thieves
Ants: Disney shows way to free spirits
Boys and girls: One of the sane relationship movies. Will redefine the way you see stupidity in hollywood relationships. Some how it is a repeat of When Harry met Sally
Dumb and Dumber: Laugh your way down the movie. ’’Oh my God, we made a mistake.’’ in the last scene is the punchline
Godfather 1: See it before GF2
Hollywood Bollywood: Lisa Ray, Indian connection, what else do you need
Home Alone: Great for kids
Matrix: It can be the above list. A Classic. I think I have developed some prejudice against it.
Malena: An Italian movie. But its great. World War 2, Italy and a boy coming to puberty. Monica bellucci. What else do you need
Jurrasic Park 1: It was my fav movie. Great entertainer.
Leon: A 12 yr old falls for 40 yr old. And she knows all about games of love
Lion King 1: Great animation from Disney
Replikate: Sex comedy, you will laugh all the way
Run Lola Run: GREAT MOVIE, 3 fates, how fast can you u run to them
Serendipity: Good one, just that there is some mess, theres beauty and that flatters me
Shakespeare In Love: Find the inspiration of Shakespeare
Sound of Music: Musical, beauty, Austrian nationalism in WW2
Terminator: Good stuff, action, drama
The Mask: He is simply too good. comedy as he does it
The Secretary: About a macho and a sado. But lovely. There is love, seduction, somehow reveals these things in us
The Truman Show: He is good. But there are more things to it than just comedy
Titanic: desi movie, videsi packing
True Romance: This is what I will truly call romance
When Harry Met Sally: A good relationship movie. The rendering by actors is classic
The Usual Suspects: ’’Keithen said he doesn’t believe in God, but he is scared of God, Well I believe in God and the only thing that scares me is Kaiser Suje’’. I thought it was a good drama but a messed up plot
