God!List ten best movies in english......huh!its a very irksome task to do.I watch quite a lot of movies, in fact , you can even call me a couch potato and also an ardent Hollywood buff.But I don't really know about old movies, so I'll list from those which I've seen.Here are my ten gems.....
### Seven brides for seven brothers(1954) ###
I watched this movie on TNT.An MGM production which centres the unruly lives of the seven Pontipee brothers, Adam Pontipee(Howard Keel) being the eldest.Things are put back in place after Adam gets married to Milly(Jane Powell).The younger bros. soon fall in love and in the end they win their damsels in distress.The Barn dance is the notable highlight of the movie with splendid choreography and its more like a romantic comedy.
### The gods must be crazy(1984) ###
I was a fourth grader when I watched this movie, but I still remember it to be hilarious.A coke bottle dropped from an airplane disrupts the quiet life of African Bushmen living in deep isolation of the Kalahari desrt.Xi, the head of the family , takes the evil thing and resumes a journey to return it to the Gods.Meanwhile, a white teacher takes a job in Botswana.Their adventure and misadventures are interwined with Xi's journey.Very simple, but has made it to my list.
### Splash(1988...i think) ###
A very fishy fairytale indeed directed by Ron Howard.It stars Tom Hanks as Allen whose life is saved by a mermaid(Darryl Hannah) some years ago and now she's grown up and comes to NYC in search of Allen.He falls in love with her and in the end struggles to accept the unpalattable truth.The mermaid 's true colours gets splashed when she really gets splashed(when she gets wet....)But life isnt smooth 'coz a curious scientist is after her.The movie imparts a lot of warmth and suspense.
### E.T ###
Wow!Steven Spielberg really takes you out of the world.An alien spaceship accidently leaves behind one of its inmates on earth.This hapless E.T. befriends Elliot, a young kid and his sister(Drew barrymore) who teach it to talk.But the danger is not very far, the scientists are after E.T and Elliot has to send E.T back home.I really cried watching this one and this E.T. though not very cute, steals the show and has won the affection of people around the world.
### The Lion King ###
Hey!Don't you ever think its just another animated movie.I watched it so many times and it was a big hit for Disney.Simba, the heir to the throne in the pridelands is the unique focus of the movie.Love, war, friendship, emotions are all well imparted through this simple movie.I loved the song ''Acuna Mattada!!''...really makes u sing it.
### Jurassic Park ###
Aahhh!!Huge things that you havent seen anywhere....splendid and awesome is this magnificent masterpiece of Spielberg.God whatta man he is!Imagination unlimited, Visual effects to the Max, Suspense, thrills, chills and above that excitement.It really takes you back to the Jurassic period and perhaps, it doesnt need any introduction.If anyone of you have missed it...Beg, borrow or steal the dvd and watch it!
### Bean, The movie ###
He is stupid, he is an intelligent dude but whatever he is.. call him, BEAN(Rowan Atkinson).This movie has hell lot of comedy and is a good exercise for your facial muscles(god!u just can't sit there without laughing......I fell off my sofa while watching this movie and even got a stomache ache while laughing).He is sent to gaurd Whistler's portrait of his mother at the art museum but due to mistaken identity lands in a pell-mell situation.A must watch..
### Castaway ###
Just imagine yourself left alone in a lonely island for the rest of your life!really scary and breath taking isnt it? But this is the main theme of the story here.Another Tom Hanks starrer....he lands on the island after a plane crash....but he does not take get depressed about his solitary life and he survives by eating coconut kernel and fish, drinking morning dew..soon he plans to return home.Tom Hanks is stupendous in his role...his performance in the scene where his dumb friend, Wilson(a white ball with his finger prints)bids adieu to him after the storm..really emotional!!The film maker must be a hard-headed man for this kind of imagination.
### Saving Private Ryan ###
Another Spielberg production similar to the fame of Schindler's list.The film which nearly runs for three hours is bookended by two wars..The story is about citizen soldiers...men caught in the teeth of extraordinary circumstances.Four of the Ryan bros.are at the battle field, but three have already passed away, the last one James Ryan (Matt Damon) is still out there.Now it is up to Cap.Miller(Tom Hanks again..) and his crew to save private ryan.A very patriotic movie, extreme violence and a nominee of a hell lot of Oscars.
### Titanic ###
Can we forget this unforgettable love story....James Cameron's second hit after the success of Terminator.The movie has a lot of extravagance, glamour, and more than that the queen of the seas, Titanic.The setup is really good and Jack(Leonardo dicaprio) and Rose(Kate Winslet) are also unforgettable.A must watch scene is the shipwreck scene....so reallistic!!Another great success is the theme song''My heart will go on...'' by the invincible Celine Dion.Deserves a place in my list.
My favourite actors:Tom Hanks, Matt Damon and Richard Gere.
There are so many good movies I would like to mention....but already my revu is tooo long!!.But please bear with me...
Forrest Gump....Schindler's list....Glory....Notting Hill....Cliffhanger....Waterworld(Kevin costner starrer)....National velvet(Liz Taylor)....Matrix....The Yearling(an old movie)....Shrek....Lilo & Stitch and list goes on...tooo many to mention.Each one his own choices and tastes..Some may like 'em and some may not..So anxiously waiting for your comments.
