MY TOP 10

10- Psycho (1960)- A horror film that makes you shiver at the thought of it ever actually happening. Alfred Hitchcock, a horror story writer as you know wrote that this film is a comedy, I disagree. The film is based around the character of Norman Bates, a psycho who lives with his mother. It is a film that you should only watch if you are not soft hearted.

9- Se7en (1995)- Se7en is film that is flawless in every way. It is a suspense thriller that does exactly that, it keeps us on the edge of our seats. Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt who play the lead roles in this film, are perfect. They work brilliantly together. This has to be Brad Pitt’s best performance, for Freeman it is yet another great show in his long career. The film is based around a mental man who goes around killing people for some ludicrous reason or another. However the murders are sometimes gross and sickening on most occasions. If you haven’t watched it then be ready for some great shocks.

8- Lion King(1994)- When most people talk about great films, they forget films for children and the younger audience, I will not make that same mistake. Lion King is a Disney film that is generally for the kids but adults will enjoy the film just as much. There is one scene which in particular that will set a child up for the rest of his life accordingly. When Simba’s father passes away, it amongst the saddest moments in animated film history. Lion King is film with a great storyline, it has great visuals, during the course of the films you will think that you are actually in the plains of Africa. Lion King has some great music and soundtracks to back it up. The two title tracks (Can You Feel The Love Tonight and Circle of Life) by Elton John were and are still very popular.

7- Face Off (1997)- There are many blockbuster Action thrillers that have been produced over the years. For me Face Off stands out. The story as unbelievable as it is does not harm the film in any way. Nicolas Cage and John Travolta team up to produce one the most incredible roller coaster rides of all time. Both of these great actors play villain and hero through the course of this film and they do it superbly. This is film which is supposed to entertain the crowds and it is very successful at it. The action scenes are simply breathtaking.

6- Saving Private Ryan (1998)- Amongst the many War Time films created in recent years, Saving Private Ryan has been the most successful, it won an Oscar back in the late 90s, as it rightly deserved. The cast of this film includes some really big names, Tom Hanks, Ted Danson, Vin Diesel, Matt Damon, Tom Sizemore and Edward Burns. Saving Private Ryan is about a team of US Soldiers who are sent on a mission to find and rescue a paratrooper by the name of Ryan (As you would have guessed). This film is probably Steven Spielberg’s best production ever. The surround sound is so good it does actually make you feel as if you are there in the film. I really do recommend this film if you haven’t watched it already.

5- LOTR The Return of the King (2003) - It would have been hard to imagine a fantasy adventure film being in the top 10 films of all time lists about 5yrs ago. But here we are in 2005 looking back at some great films, Lord Of The Rings: The Return of The King is a great film. LOTR 3 is the ideal ending to the greatest trilogy of all time. This is a film for all ages, no can get bored of this film, if they do then God help them. LOTR 3 won 11 Oscars last year, it wiped the floor clean at the awards ceremony. LOTR 3 is the 3rd film ever to have won 11 awards at the Oscars, this tells us one of two things, this film is either really special or there was not too much competition for Peter Jackson and his gang of record breakers. I will leave that for you to decide. Many people complained about the length of this film, I don’t think there is a problem at all. I never, not even once looked at my watch during this film. If you haven’t watched this film go out and get it!

4- The Shawshank Redemption (1994)- “Few films can capture the triumph of the human spirit in the way ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ does”. This is the slogan for the film, and how true it is. There are few films which can bring you so much happiness as The Shawshank Redemption does. What makes this film so great is the fact that it was made without a big budget, yet it has gone on to become of the greatest films of all time. Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins are terrific in this prison film. I loved this film from start to end, there are so many good things that if I was to note them all I would be here all day. The music to this film is also very good. But my most favourite thing about this film is the quotes that the writer has produced. One of them is “I have had many sleepless nights inn my life, but that night was the worst of my life”, the way in which Freeman says this line really touches me. If you haven’t seen this film then what are you playing at?

3- The Green Mile (1999)- The Green Mile just like The Shawshank Redemption is film based on a Stephen King novel. The Green Mile is not a film for the faint hearted, for you will end up I tears as I did after I had finished watching it. Tom Hanks and his fellow guards work on the death row, the one they work on is called The Green Mile. These men have to then carry out the execution of a wrongly accused man. The man who has been wrongly accused it a Miracle in himself. Tom Hanks then has to come to make the worst decision of his life when he has to decide whether or not to go ahead with the execution. There are lots of in betweens, but really that is the main plot of the film. I don’t like talking about this film much, it put me in a bad mood straight away. In other words only watch this film if you are not a faint hearted like me.

2- Gladiator (2000)- Ridley Scott is a well renowned film Director, this is his finest

work to date. Gladiator is an epic set in ancient Rome. Russell Crowe plays the lead role as an army general who is almost killed when the emperor’s son kills his father. This army general returns to Rome as a gladiator to avenge the deaths of his wife and son. The newly seated corrupt Emperor faces this vengeful Gladiator in a dramatic finale. There are also some great musical scores to this film. Five awards went Gladiator’s way in the Oscars that year, including the most important, “Best Picture”.

1-Braveheart (1995)- I had a lot of trouble in creating a list of top 10, because I did not know in precisely what order to put these films. There was however one thing which I was certain of from the moment I decided to compile this list, Braveheart was going to be my number 1. Braveheart was Mel Gibson’s directorial debut, what a debut it was. This film went on to win 5 Oscars including the “Best Picture”. Braveheart is another epic, this time medieval Scotland and England is the setting. The story is about a Scottish commoner by the name of William Wallace. Wallace unites the Scots together to battle the cruel English King, his name being Edward Longshanks. Historically this film is very inaccurate, but that doesn’t matter as this film is great nevertheless. The battle scenes in this film are so real. Probably the best thing about this film is the beautiful musical scores that are there to accompany a great story. I have recommended to you several films, but I tell you this is the one film you should really go out of your way to watch.
