Having watched more music videos than Michael Jackson has made dance moves, I decided to make a list of the videos that according to me deserve praise. Here are in chronological order the songs that are a compliment to music videos that were ever made.
Another brick in the wall(Part 2) Pink Floyd
The words ‘We don’t need no education’ seemed to be the most powerful asset for kids growing up in the 70’s and 80’s, at the same time alarming every education institution that ever existed in the realms of reality. These scornful lyrics were fueled by a chilling video depicting school children on a conveyer belt ending up as what looks like sausages.
Controversial as this video may be, Pink Floyd proved just how influential media could be. And the picture of the little boy looking admiringly at a picture of Bob Geldof(the guy who played the role of the lead singer in the movie ‘The Wall’) didn’t hurt.
Smells like teen spirit Nirvana
This song is proof enough that Grunge ain’t Dead! Apart from single handedly launching a new genre if music, it triggered a phenomenon that would go on to become a legend. This video could not be more perfect – distorted and destructive, depicting the band performing at a high-school with cheerleaders and on looking fans.
Beautiful day U2
‘It’s a beautiful day, don’t let it get away’. Could Bono have been more reassuring? Set in an airport this video is as beautiful as the song itself. Enough said.
Scar Tissue The Red Hot Chilie Peppers
It was nice to see the laid back, sentimental side of RHCP in this video, proving that the too, are very regular people. Anthony Keidis sings the song cleverly as the band drive through what seems to be a very deserted highway. John Frusiante plays the guitar subtlety, adding to the brilliance of the song.
Without Me Eminem
Oh yeah! This video was every Eminem fan’s dream come true. It was awesome to see Eminem doing what he does best – rap and abuse fellow media personalities(tastefully) who deserved it any way. This video was just fun. It launched Eminem as a force to be reckoned with.
How you remind me Nickleback
This is the quintessential break up video, adapted from a short story. In the words of Chad Kroger “It is about a four year relationship that was three years too long.” It was also the most aired video of 2002. I guess it was a tough year for everyone!
Where is the Love? Black Eyed Peas
Does ? look familiar. After having launched their rap meets funk meats rhythm style, the BEP came out with this video which was motivating to say the least. The spoke about war and peace, accentuating their point by the ? symbol tattooed, painted and also lit across a building. Boy, did they get their point across or what!
The Remedy Jason Mraz
Somehow the line ‘I won’t worry my life away’ makes more sense to you when you hear Jason Mraz sing it. It is hard not to like the video because as simple as it is, it only compliments what the lyrics say. In the video, Mraz makes his way through the day, giving the people ‘the remedy’ to live in the moment.
American Idiot Green day
Green Day could not have been more clear of what they were trying to establish by releasing the song just a month ahead of the elections in the US. The video features the trio singing in front of a larger than life size painted American flag that begins to peal off slowly and later floods the set.
1985 Bowling for Soup
This is one of those videos that has a storyline and you can’t help but follow it every single time like it were some soap opera. If you were a kid growing up in the 80’s dominated by George Michael, Madonna and bad hairstyles, you will certainly enjoy it. It is about this woman who is still stuck in the 80’s and later deals with reality as it slams her in the face. Very very amusing.
I thought it would be rude not to list the videos that made me jump out of my seat and stare in disbelief(excuse the exaggeration) at how bad a music video can be. The following is the list of the 10 Most Devastatingly Bad Music Videos Ever:
Mmm Bop Hanson
Get out of my dreams, get into my car Billy Ocean
Land Down Under Men At Work
Informer Snow
I’m a Barbie girl Aqua
Lucky Britney Spears
My Generation Limp Bizkit
Get down Backstreet boys
Escape Enrique(no comments)
Candy Shop 50 Cent(This song spent 9 long weeks on the billboard charts at #1. The insanity ended last weak. I heard people are slowly recovering from bad taste.)
