I was looking for a topic to write on today.when I stumbled upon Gulazar saabs name in the Topics list:
Could not resist this temptation to share my favorite poet and lyricists all time favorites.
These lyrics are picked from Hindi films, and not from other general poetry and nazms to make it more palatable to all MS dost log.
The list is more on the lines on MY Favorites, though serious poets may find the order somewhat jumbled or may find other lyrics to come into the BEST list. More than just lyrics, the songs that have been included in this list will always be remembered for their mellifluous notes in addition to the depth in the words.
**1.Hazar rahen mud ke dekhi - Thodi si bewafai - 1980 **
A haunting melody- Music by Khayyam
These lines especially:
** * Kahi kissi roz yu bhi hota
Hamaari haalat tumhaari hoti
Jo raatein hamne guzaari marke
Woh raat tumne guzaari hoti
Badi wafa se, nibhaayi tumne
Hamaari thodi si bewafaai . * **
are very close to my heart. I wish someone can translate it in English without losing the depth and richness of urdu-for the benefit of our non-hindi speaking friends.
This song conveys the pain and the immense sorrow of separation with ones beloved- when misunderstandings play foul and prevent any sort of reconciliation. This interpretation may not be in the context of the movies story-line.
2.**Mera kuchh saamaan - Ijaazat - 1988 **
** * meraa kuchh saamaan tumhaare paas padaa hai
o o o! saavan ke kuchh bhiige bhiige din rakhe hain
aur mere ek khat mein lipaTii raat padi hai
vo raat bhulaa do, meraa vo saamaan lautaa do
meraa kuchh saamaan tumhaare paas padaa hai * **
Nearly a year ago when life bowled its bouncer on my face, times were bad. People changed, circumstances changed- pain was constant. This song would invariably fill up my eyes, choke my throat, whether I was in a bus, whether I was hearing it on my walkman on the roads, I JUST COULD NOT STOP THE TEARS-no dam could have curtailed them, and in a way I always felt better after listening to this.
SO many times, we attach more importance to materialistic things, but the emotions that we exchange with someone are so priceless, and you can never give them back just as you received them. Woh saaaman kabhi lauta nahi sakte.
** * Ek sau solaa chaand ki raaten ek tumhaare kaandhe kaati
giilii mehendi ki khushabuu, jhoot mooth ke shikave kuchh
jhoot mooth ke vaade sab yaad karaa do
sab bhijavaa do, meraa vo saamaan lauTaa do * **
Roughly translated in English:
All those moonlit nites.my head rested on your shoulder when I fell asleep, that intoxicating smell of wet henna, those silly arguements I had with you, and those promises made in mischief.send me everything.send all these back.to me
I remember, I never applied henna on my hands because he wouldnt like the smell of it, even though I loved it.
He would also tell me that he loved when I make false promises.keeping in line with my mischievous self.this song made me remember all the beautiful moments of the past and moistened my eyes.
** * Katra katra milti hai
Katra katra jiine do
zindagi hai, bahane do
pyaasi huun main pyaasi rahane do * **
Another masterpiece from the same movie- Ijaazat-
3. This one from Movie- Khamoshi- 1969
** * Hamne dekhi hai in aankho ki mahekti khushboo
Haath se chhuke isse rishto ka ilzaam na do
Sirf ehsaas hai ye ruh se mehsoos karo
Pyaar ko pyaar hi rehne do koyi naam na do
Hamne dekhi hai . ** * One of my all time favorite lines….sung in her usual grace by Lata ji…am tempted to write the whole song here….if anyone would like to have the complete lyrics, Please M2M me.
Gulzar ji has written two more gem of songs for this movie….sung in the melodious voice of Hemant Kumar
Tum Pukar lo.tumhara intezaar hai AND
** * Vo shaam kuchh ajiib thii
jhukii huii nigaah me, kahiin meraa Khayaal thaa
dabii dabii hansiin me ik, hasiin saa savaal thaa
main sochataa thaa, meraa naam gunagunaa rahii hai vo
na jaane kyuun lagaa mujhe, ke muskuraa rahii hai vo
vo shaam kuchh ajiib thii ** *
4. ** * Tujhse naaraaz nahi zindagi hairaan hu mai
AND
Do naina ek kahani thoda sa baadal-* ** Masoom -1982
5. ** * Aane wala pal jaane wala hai
ho sake to is me.n
zindagii bitaa do
pal jo ye jaane vaalaa hai
ek baar yuu.N milii, maasuum sii kalii khilate hue kahaa
khush paash main chalii
dekhaa to yahiin hai.n
Dhoondaa to nahiin hain
pal jo ye jaane vaalaa hain
* **– Golmaal-
Simple yet very meaningful-always hummable
6. ** * Ae zindagi gale lagaa le * **—Sadma-1983
Ah……life….take me in your embrace……
7. ** * Naa jiya laage na, tere bina mera kahi jiyaa laage na * ** - Anand- 1973
Lovely song picturised on a woman waiting for her love to come back home……
Tum agar jao kahi jao kabhi
Waqt se kehna zaraa who theher jae wahin
Who ghadi wahi rahe naa jaye na ….naaa….
Trsut Gulzaar saab to paint the feelings of a woman’s heart pining to see her beloved-in such a picturesque manner.
8. ** * Chod aaye hum who Galiyaan+ Paani paani re * **—Maachis-1996
Pani pani re khaare paani re
Pani pani re khaare paani re
Nainon mein bhar jaaye
Neendein khaali kar jaaye
_
** * Chhod Aaye Hum Vo Galiyaan Jahan Tere Pairon Ke Kawal Gira Karte Thay
Hanse To Do Gaalon Mein Bhanvar Pada Karte Thay
Teri Kamar Ke Bal Pe Nadi Muda Karti Thi
Hansi Teri Sun Sunke Phasal Paka Karti Thi
Chhod Aaye Hum Vo Galiyaan . * **
9. ** * Jiya Jale, Jaan jale * ** - Dil se- 1998-
Ang ang mein jalti hai dard ki chingaariyaan
Masle phoolon ki mehek mein titliyon ki kyaariyaan
Raat bhar bechaari mehndi pisti hai peiron taley
Kya karoon kaise kahoon raat kab kaise dhale
Mehendi seems to be quite a common feature is Gulzaar saab’s poetry .
10. Yeh lamha filhaal jee lene de- ** Filhaal-2001
** * Eh zindagi ye lamha jee lene dein
Oh… pehle se likha, kuch bhi nahin
Roz naya kucch, likhti hai tu
Jo bhi likha hai, dil se jiya hai
Ye lamha filhaal jee lene dein * **
