AB is the King

  1. Sher Khan (Pran) a notorious criminal comes to the police station to meet the new Inspector Vijay Khanna. Taking this to be a routine visit, he casually pulls a chair and is about to sit, when to his utter shock, he finds his chair being kicked away. Inspector Vijay looks into his eyes and growls ?Jab Tak Baitne Ko Bolun, Khade Rehna. Yeh Police Station hai tumhare baap ka Ghar Nahin?. The tone in the voice, the look of anger in the eyes and the expression on the actor?s face, announced to every one ?A Star is Born?.

The movie Zanzeer, the actor Amitabh Bachan. The audience applauded as one man, never had they seen a Bollywood hero speaking like this. Zanzeer was the movie that launched Amitabh to stardom. As the tough as nails cop who takes on the criminal Teja( Ajit), AB puts in a knockout performance. Watch this movie and you would understand why. Zanzeer was a landmark movie in many aspects and is one of Amitabh?s best performances.

  1. The doctor, Babu Moshai, enters the room and sees his best friend Anand lying on the death bed. Where Babu Moshai was a brooding, cynical individual, Anand was a man full of life and hope. Yet the irony was that Babu Moshai was fated to live and Anand was fated to die. Babu Moshai cannot control his emotions and breaks down, asking his friend ?Baathe Karo Mujhse?. He cannot bear the silence of this man, who irritated and amused him with his non stop banter. And as if on cue, a tape recorder runs ?Babu Moshai, Zindagi Aur Maut Ki Khel Mein Hum Sab Katputhli Hain?.

As the tape runs it full course, and comes to an end, Babu Moshai realizes that the one man who taught him to live is himself no more. A classic of a movie, Anand, was directed by that master story teller Hrishida. The then superstar Rajesh Khanna had the author backed role, but AB was brilliant as Babu Moshai, the cynical, brooding doctor.

  1. The dock yard coolie, Vijay Verma, meets the gangster(Ifthikar) who makes a deal with him. Earlier Vijay had beaten to pulp the goons who were controlling the dockyard, after he refused to pay them the hafta. Ifthikar who belongs to the rival gang, picks up Vijay as he finds him the best weapon for his operations. Vijay who has known only poverty and misery since childhood, has no qualms, about operating on the other side of the law, as long as he makes money. He is a man of self respect, so when Ifthikar, throws the bundle of notes at him, he tells him ?Seth, main aaj bhi phenke hue paisa nahin utatha hoon?.

This is a throwback to his childhood days when he was working as a shoeshine boy and Ifthikar throws a coin at him. His self respect injured he tells him ?Saab, hum bhikari nahin hain?. Ifthikar tells his aide ? Yeh Ladka bahut bada ban jaayega?. And fate brings them together again. This was one of the best scenes in Deewar, where AB puts in another brilliant performance as the dockyard coolie, who becomes the most dreaded gangster in town, and is finally gunned down by his inspector brother Ravi(Shashi Kapoor) as he breathes his last in his mother?s lap. The same mother who left him unable to tolerate his unlawful ways.

  1. Vijay, comes to meet his father R.K.Gupta( Sanjeev Kumar) at his office. In fact Vijay is the illegitimate son of R.K.Gupta who had left behind his mother(Waheeda Rehman). And Vijay has his revenge on his dad, by ruining his business empire and driving a wedge between his family members. As R.K.Gupta meets him and demands to know what he had done to deserve all this, he points out how he had deserted his mother for the sake of money. And then gives the parting shot ?Main aaj aapse garib aadmi kahin nahin dekha hai Mr.R.K.Gupta?.

Trishul** starring AB as Vijay is one of my favorite movies again. The rivalry between Amitabh and Sanjiv makes for fascinating viewing. Trishul has got to be one of AB?s best characters, as it has shades of gray in it. In spite of his rivalry with Sanjeev, he doesn?t mind giving Sanjeev a helping hand when he needs . Yet he is unscrupulous enough to try enticing Sheetal( Hema Malini) who happens to be the fiancé of Shekar(Shashi Kapoor) , Gupta?s only son. This is surely a humdinger of a movie.

  1. Enough has been said and written about Sholay. I don?t think have further much to add to it. This is an all time classic. The performances of AB, Dharam Paaji, Sanjiv Kumar, Amjad Khan in fact every one in the movie are outstanding. The brilliant action sequences, especially the opening one where dacoits attack the train, would do Hollywood proud.

Years later Sholay has become the bench mark for all commercial movies. Dharam Paaji was outstanding in his comic role, but AB as Jai, the worldly wise laid back criminal was just superb. Whether its casually asking ?Tumhara Naam Kya Hai Basanti? or sipping tea nonchalantly during Dharam Paaji?s ?sooocide? scene or putting a marriage proposal for his friend or his silent romance with the widowed Radha( Jaya Bachan), AB was just top in form.
