So Here is a review of Top Ten TV Serials Who Created History and achieved heights of popularity!
10. The Zee Horror show: I remember the terrifying music (with terrible acting) in this serial. It was one and only popular horror show around 1994-95 on TV’s. Aahat followed with some quality...but zee horror show saw a great response in early days.
9. Karamchand: Pankaj Kapoor and the famous ’’kitty’’ I this was presume first detective serial on Indian TV, with ’Karamchand’ eating his Carrot like Bugs Bunny!
8. Hum Log: This was the first TV Soap of India with Magnificent summary at the end by Ashok Kumar. This one successfully pictured average Indian middle class family and their problems.A popular choice those times.
7. Shanti: Mandira Bedi was a ’ghar-ghar ki pehchan’ with this hit soap every day afternoon(She was really popular with all mothers). It followed by swabhiman one more soap to last its bubbles... [Mandira later became hot favourite of all fathers with her Extraaa (Innings) in Cricket! :) ]
6. Close-up Antakshari: Friday Nights were never so popular...But Antakshari the real ’’Star’’ behind ZEE’s popularity and the show was a super hit in India and abroad. (Anu Kapoor made some real good cash, with his ’Desh-Bhakti’ on this show!)
5. Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi...! Yes this one is a trp down the memory lane...SBKBT is four years old now (still running!! God Help) With Tulsi’s interest into Lotus during elections I thought this show will stop now...But nope! They are still popular, and longest running show on TV History I guess (I wonder why Ba is still Alive?!) Anyways the truth is it is one of the most popular soap on Indian TV.
4. Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi... Indeed, Jassi showed that for making a hit serial you don’t need truck load of ’Sas Bahus’. An ugly duckling can also pull over a huge popularity if it is well spiced up! Hats of to marketing strategy of Sony.(And also Indian Audience who still watch Jassi...I mean how can they watch it?! sorry no personal opinions...This is about popularity!)
3. Surabhi: Sunday nights and Surabhi was a treat to watch! This informative show, with the wits of Siddharth Kak & Renuka was highly popular those days. (I read some where that this show was responsible for increase in sales of ’Colgate Toothpaste’. Reason, everyone wanted an infectious smile like Renuka..err sorry Mr. Ashutosh Rana)
2. Mahabharat: This one really saw TV coming to age (Yes Mythological Age!) Not only the serial but all the characters were famous too. Ramayan was popular too, but ’Mahabharata’ like its name was seen by whole Bharat. What a serial by B.R. Chopra... I really don’t have words to describe this epic of an serial.

Without any doubts this was the most popular and larger than life Game Show Serial which was so popular that, streets had a deserted look from 9pm to 10pm. Amitabh Bacchan The Shehenshah (Emperor) of Bollywood also became the Emperor of Indian Television Industry with this show. My friend in Maharashtra State Electricity Board told me that during this show they used to observe the ’peak power’ consumption in Grids. Such was a popularity of this show.
