So what’s the fraccas all about? A not so well known actor like Daniel Craig donning the famous
shoes of 007 for the next three Bond Movies? Why millions of Bond fans across the world have literally taken up arms against the producers? Why? Well its a very serious issue.
First of all, James Bond is no ordinary movie Character. He’s more of a legend who has been saving the wolrd with panache for more than half a decade. The role, the character, demands specific traits.
Tamper with those and you are threatening to destroy the image-- the image, Bond fans demand, love, are used to and take pride on. No wonder a lot of factors MUST be taken into account when choosing the actor who will play the role of the legendary double ’0" British Agent. This means ( as per Ian Fleming)---
1.James Bond is a Britisher--
He’s age is on the wrong side of 40. Difficult to figure. Has a suave yet weather beaten look.
Looks somewhat handsome with a cruel charm. But never the less a pucca gentleman used to
a connoisiurs lifestyle.
Is witty and radiates a strong twisted sense of humor.
Wirey looks and of medium built.. Bond is no muscle man. He’s lithe.
Those are some of the few characteristics James Bond oozes. No wonder Sean Connery, Moore &
Brosnan were accepted. Dalton lost out because spite of being a super actor he portaryed Bond as
too serious and stiff. OHMSS flopped not because of Lazenby, but the stupid movie script where they
marry off Bond! See, Bond can’t move out of his cast! Fans won’t accept it. Brosnan was dumped by Barbara Broccoli because she wanted any Tom Dick or Harry who’d do the role for peanuts! No wonder she picked up a nobody like DAnile Craig who’s biggest credit till then was a small role as Lara Croft’s sidekick in Tomb Raider-1 and then as the cab driver in ’Munich’.
So who else was there? Brosnan ofcourse is the 1st choice. He’s good enough to do a couple.
Last year in Liverpool the man couldn’t help but vent his frustration on the producers on live TV.
Next I would think of Ralph Finnes (Avengers, Red Dragon) He fits the bill.
Robby Williams? (He looks like Connery’s cousin! has that mischevous look and sure can act)
Hugh Jackman? Is a good actor and has the wirey looks. Needs a haircut.
Collin Firth? Would defintely fit better than Craig. Only problem-- He looks too much of Mr. Nice guy.
The problem is Daniel Craig in no way looks like Bond or fits the bill. One should be very careful
cuz one is remaking Casino Royale’ -- This movie was more of a comedy with everything from Mata Hari, and UFOs and more than a dozen James Bonds in it and was a huge flop). Infact it had little to do with the original spine chilling novel by Fleming.
I recently saw a few clippings of the new Casino, where ol’ boy Craig utters the famous words--
All I could do was shudder. Heck! He looks like a lizard on legs! As for acting. forget acting. He never
even looks the part. And that’s the worst part.
So James Bond belongs very much to his fans. He is a big franchisee today with big banners. While the producers should keep that in mind for thier own interests, they just can’t deny the overwhelming
number of Bond fans of all ages who have rejected Craig. Thousands of sites have popped up in a desperate bid to save the secret service agent. Below is just an example---
