It is common knowledge that Hollywood is head and shoulders above any other movie industry in terms of the quality ofthe movies they produce. Having been a total movie buff all my life I have greatly enjoyed some of them and have listed out here my favorite ten(In no particular order)
.GODFATHER- Coppolas adaptation of Mario Puzos novel was as close to flawless as anything can be.Marlon Brando as the don was tremendous ably supported by the young Al pacino as Mike.Unforgettable dialogues (I will make u an offer u cannot refuse), that tight upper lip of the Don and the essentially dark & serious nature of cinematograohy makes this movie one of the most adored movies of all times.
.GLADIATOR- As one movie reviewer had stated about this movie that "This movie begs to be watched on the biggest screen possible." I have always been a huge fan of good well made period movies and to me this has been the best of them all(Although I havent watched BEN HUR which I have heard is equally well made) .Directed by Ridley Scott, This movie is set in ancient Rome and depicts the heroics of Maximus, the general played by Russel Crowe(Got an oscar for it).More than anything else what amazed me most was the feel of the movie. The war sequence with which the movie starts right to the decimation of Comodus(looser king awesomely played by Joaquin Phoenix) will keep you spell bound.A must watch.
.TITANIC- The most expensive movie ever made in Hollywood history and most of us would agree that it was more than worth every penny of it. James Cameroons depiction of the much hyped cruise liner Titanics ill fated journey from Southampton to New York was a world wide hit.It bagged 11 oscars (the most by a single film till date).
.FORREST GUMP- A story about a crippled boy who rose above all the challenges and went on to become the best in whatever he did.(Be it running, playing TT, a soldier during vietnam war and many more activities ).Starring Tom Hanks in the lead role and directed by Robert Zemeckis this movie justified its tagline "The world will never be the same once youve seen it through the eyes of Forrest Gump."
.TERMINATOR 2- The best of the terminator trilogy where terminator played by Arnold Schwrazzengger(I hope the spelling is right ) has been sent from the future to save a boy from another evil machine who will do anything to kill him. This James Cameroon movie has been one of the best action flicks ever.
.JURASSIC PARK- Humans have always been fascinated by the pre-historic creatures that roamed the planet. This Steven Spielberg adaptation of a Michael Crichton book provides a sneak-peek into what earth looked like 65 million years ago.Along with that it had tremendous thrilling sequences which make it one of the best movies to watch along with family.
.JERRY MAGUIRE- This movie was all about lovable characters and unforgettable oneliners.Tom Cruise fitted to the role of the sports agent perfectly delivering one of his best performances till date. A guy leaves a well settled job to pursue his dreams of his own firm.He has a single temperamental client and a single employee who starts to love him.The end however is like a fairytale which leave you with a nice "feel good" emotion.
.CATCH ME IF U CAN- Another Spielberg thriller on the life of Frank William Abegnale (played by Leo Di Caprio) who was a prodigious con and went about looting the banks in Europe and America with forged cheques. He is chased by an FBI investigator(The flawless Tom Hanks) who is always oh-so-close to his catch. This is a definite "edge of the seat" stuff.
.SAVING PRIVATE RYAN- The Spielberg-Tom Hanks combine at its best again. The plot was about a group of US soldiers who wanna save one of their comrades who had been trapped in enemy territorry. Some would say the scenes were unnecessarily gory but in my opinion this has been the best depiction of world war -2 till date.(Another such movie was ENEMY AT THE GATES)
.BRAVEHEART- Directed by Mel Gibson himself this movie is about a certain William Wallace(played by himself) who unites and motivates his fellow scots to free their land from the clutches of English king.Best movie by Mel till date. He tried to use the same formulain The PATRIOT which too was extremely watchable.
That sums up my list.Let me know your thoughts on this.
