~*~ Meri rooh ko chookar kaun guzra ~*~

Some songs stir feelings which sometimes you may not even comprehend. After hearing them you may either feel happy or sad, you may go into introspective mode, feel the pain of others. It may also happen that you simply love those songs for no reason. Some songs will always linger in the mind and some of them find their way into this review. The song may maybe your favourite one or the one which you love to hate. There are many songs which I feel that are subconsciously in my mind all the time but I am listing only ten songs ( sigh! very difficult to choose just 10 songs) I have chosen the lines from each song which draw me towards them the most.

1) Zara saamne toh aao chhaliye

Movie: Janam Janam Ke Fere

Sung By: Mohammad Rafi/Lata Mangeshkar, Music By: S N Tripathi, Lyricist: Bharat Vyas

pita apne balak se bichhad ke

sukh se kabhi nahin so sakta

Bharat Vyas had a tiff with his son and he left home. A father missed his son and was worried about him. He poured out his feelings for his son, the errant son heard this song and returned home to his father. Being a parent, I know very well, how it is to be away from your children.

2) Ho ke majaboor mujhe usne bhulaaya hoga

Movie: Haqeeqat, Sung By: Mohammad Rafi/Talat Mehmood/Bhupinder/Manna De , Music By: Madan Mohan, Lyricist: Kaifi Azmi

gum dikhaawe ki hansi ne na chhupaaye honge

naam par mere jab aansoo nikal aaye honge

A soldier on the battle-field thinking about his beloved, what she must be going through. Visualises her as facing the circumstances bravely even after knowing that her loved one may never return home again.

3) Jab bhi yeh dil udaas hota hain

Movie: Seema, Sung By: Mohammad Rafi/Sharda, Music By: Shankar-Jaikishan, Lyricist: Gulzar

saans kuchh tez tez chalti ho

aankhen jab de rahi hon aawazen

This is one of Rafi Saheb’s best song. Though it is picturised on Simi Garewal and Kabir Bedi, somehow I always visualize this song on Hema Malini and Dharmendra. I would listen to this song whenever my hubby was away. A person always feels the presence of her/ his loved one around.

4) Ik din bik jaayega, maati ke mol

Movie: Dharam Karam Sung By: Chorus/Mukesh, Music By: R D Burman, Lyricist: Majrooh Sultanpuri

ik din bik jaayega, maati ke mol

jag mein rah jaayenge, pyaare tere bol

A person lives all his worldly goods behind upon his death. This song urges one to become a good human, only his deeds are remembered. This song had influenced my naïve mind very much.

5) Hamein Tumse Pyaar Kitna

Movie: Qudrat, Sung By: Kishore Kumar/Parveen Sultana, Music By: R D Burman, Lyricist: Majrooh Sultanpuri

Suna gum judaai ka, uthaate hain log

Jaane zindagi kaise, bitaate hain log

Can you imagine life without your loved ones? Separation even a temporary one is difficult to bear. This is a semi-classical song, has two versions, sung by Kishore Kumar who was nominated for Filmfare award and Parveen Sultana who walked away with the much acclaimed Fimfare award for this song.

6) Ai Malik tere bande hum

Movie: Do Ankhen Barah Haath, Sung By: Lata Mangeshkar/V Shantaram, Music By: Vasant Desai, Lyricist: Bharat Vyas

neki par chale aur badi se tale

taki hanste huae nikale dum

This song has haunted me since I saw the movie first as a kid. This song is the voice of my conscience. This is a prayer song in several schools. Doing good deeds may ease the fear of death for one is always conscious of Heaven and Hell after death. One hears too many stories about these concepts from childhood and they prevent us from performing bad deeds.

7) Aayi zanjeer ki jhankaar Khuda khair kare

Movie: Razia Sultan, Sung By: Kabban Mirza, Music By: Khaiyyam, Lyricist: Jaan Nisar Akhtar

aayi zanjeer ki jhankaar Khuda khair kare

dil hua kiska giraftaar Khuda khair kare

True love binds two people spiritually. They do not need to be bound physically by chains nor they need tobe chained to prevent from meeting each other. True love doesn’t always mean that the persons involved need tobe physically present in front of one another. One never knows when one falls in love, it just happens, it is easier to accept rather than fight it.

8) Husn ki waadiyon mein

Movie: Waris, Sung By: Lata Mangeshkar/Vinod Rathod/Chorus, Music By: Uttam Singh-Jagdish Khanna

Lyricist: Verma Malik

tu pehlu mein baithi ho mere haathon mein ho haath tera

aise mile phir na toote baanhon ka yeh narm ghera

This song speaks of eternal love. This was the last film of late Smita Patil, she has excelled herself as usual. She was heavily pregnant at that time but that never marred her performance. A lover always wants his beloved to be next to him but alas he never knows that it may not be possible always.

9) Dekh lo aaj humako ji bharke

Movie: Baazaar, Sung By: Jagjit Kaur, Music By: Khaiyyam, Lyricist: Mirza Shauq

dekh lo aaj hamako ji bharke -2

koi aata nahin hain phir marke

This song is from another masterpiece of a movie, I am yet to see this movie but I am madly in love with the songs of this movie even after so many years. All the songs of this movie gives me goosebumps. It speaks of helplessness of two lovers who could not marry each other. The two lovers meeting each other for the last time. Death is not always physical, the emotional death can be as worse as the physical one. The song is played in the background, the two lovers speak the language of silence.

10) Maan mera ahasaan are naadaan ke maine

Movie: Aan, Sung By: Mohammad Rafi, Music By: Naushad, Lyricist: Shakeel Badayuni

meri nazar ki dhoop na bharti roop toh hota

husn tera bekaar, maine tujhse kiya hain pyaar

I love to hate this song. This song can get damn irritating but I can never stop loving this song. One never does a favour by loving another person. This song is apt in the context of the film but in real world, I can never expect this kind of thing.

I have listed some of my choices, which songs haunt you the most?
