Mexican with an Indian flavor

During the last few years, I had developed or rather felt the need for trying out different cuisines as like everybody else a human beings palate also demands some kind of change. And, naturally Mexican came to my mind during the first instant, as this could be the only cuisine that is very close to Indian.

So my search for a Mexican restaurant in Hyderabad ended with this restaurant called ’’ Tex-Mex’’. I was excited as the name sounded very hip and embarked on my journey to relish the Mexican fare. When I entered the restaurant, first thing that grabbed my attention was the dim lighting and sitting divided on two sides with an aisle in between that leads to the kitchen.

I settled down and reviewed the menu card that was placed with a flourish on my table. It was a pretty detailed menu but alas it had devoted 50% of it to Indian and other cuisines like Chinese etc. I was slightly disappointed as I was hoping it would be 100% genuine Mexican loaded menu card. Perhaps, hoping isn’t the right way to experiment on new things.

Anyways, I started the ordering with some enchiladas and tortillas. For somebody who hasn’t tasted Mexican, let me quickly fill you in with the main ingredients of Mexican food. It comprises mainly of Wheat based chapatti type preparation, black beans (rajma), brown beans, Sliced Cabbages, mexican sauce, jalapenos, Green and Red Chilles and OMG! Cheese that is used in abundance. And, of course rice that is cooked in a steamed fashion and is slightly scented which I strongly suspect is flavored with some special spices.

The enchiladas and tortillas were extremely nice which are nothing but roti style preparation filled with all stuffing’s that I described above with your choice of veggies or meat. Along with the rotis a small portion of the rice is also served with a different Mexican style sauce. Hmmmmm...It was delicious and then I ordered for my favorite dish which is a ’’Burrito’’ which is made again of Wheat/Maida and filled with different types of salad, meat, cheese and spices and is a big wrap around. But, I didn’t quite like this dish as it looked soggy and not as crisp from outside and soggy from inside combination that it should have been.

For the non-experiment types, there is the usual Indian and Chinese fan fare available. What I personally felt was that it tried to indianize the food a bit too much. If they had stuck to serving the authentic taste, perhaps it would have tasted better.

On the drinks side, you can order both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks that are slightly on the expensive side. The mocktails were limited and nothing exotic. The ambience is nice but nothing to make you tipsy topsy.

Another advantage of this place is that there is a pub (SUNDOWNER) right upstairs and guys who like to down a few pitchers before enjoying the Mexican, can very well do that. I suppose that will only enhance the taste of Mexican food. Ha Ha!

I’d recommend this place for once for sure but your next visit depends on how tired you’re of experimenting all other cuisines and want a refreshing change.

Cheers and Enjoy!
