A Movie with a Moral

Director cum actor Cheran has been one of my favorite since Pandavar Bhoomi. He chooses stories of the common man. That’s what make him a cut above the rest. In Autograph, he showed the life of a common man since his schooldays, till he grew into an established man.

In Thavamai Thavamirundhu, Autograph, ie his previous work , becomes, only a part of the story!

I felt this movie was the best of 2005 as well as the best of Cheran. In Tamil Cinema, we have had numerous works showing the mother sentiment. One could name a few easily. But, is there a single movie which has been taken from the view of a father? Well, this area was completely unexplored, and Thavamai... will be the first movie under this catagory. Let me tell about the story.

The Story

Raj Kiran is a poor man who earns just enough to run his family. He owns a printing press which makes posters for politics etc. This business is all Raj Kiran knows in the movie. He has 2 kids. Raj Kiran , as a father, feels that he wants his children to get the best of education so that they can be well settled in life. Hence, beyond his capability, he enrols them in a convent.

The various other problems faced by a poor father is also depicted in this movie very well.

The college admission of his sons puts Raj Kiran into heavy debts. He manages all the problems with extreme difficulty and finally gets his 1st son married. Problems prop up between the 1st son and the parents nad he goes away. From here, the movie concentrates on Cheran’s suffering after completion of college and how he manages to be successful in his married life as well as in his career.

Cheran, becomes a very responsible son and takes excellent care of his parents in the city. He keeps them very happy. However, the mother dies due to old age. After this, it would be better if you guys saw the movie as it is very touching.

The Moral.

This movie has reminded each and every one of us, that, a father is as much important as the mother. It has also shown that one should work hard and repay their parents by taking care of them in their old age.

Raj Kiran deserves a National Award for this film. He has proven to be a versatile actor. Others also did their part very well. But, the only negative of this film was that the story dragged a bit in the middle. Hey, wait, it’s no joke making the audience watch a film for 3+ hours!
