Though the society has answers on how to be successful, very few of us have answers to poignant questions. Majority of these questions relate to purpose, meaning and the objectification of human beings. The book starts with these questions and seeks to find an answer to these questions.
The treatment of human beings as resources devoid of voice started with the Industrial age mindset, which is irrelevant in this modern age, according to the book. This makes majority of corporate workplaces efficient – doing things in the least possible time. However, it does not address these basic human concerns. This book seeks to address the human side of organizations.
Dr. Covey argues that there are certain universal principles that govern all human beings, irrespective of race, caste, gender, economic status, etc. Violating these basic principles can have an adverse impact on human beings.
I personally found the first 3 chapters(The Pain, problem and solution) to be the best. Though it is a book related to HR function, it is a must for all managers as the problems discussed are universal to all teams.
People who are looking for quick fix inspiration and motivation may not find it useful. Secondly, a few of the ideas are similar to other Stephen Covey’s books. This would make many of the ideas repetitive for those who have read his other books.
Pros: Meaningful, relevant, different perspective, deals with universal human dilemmas
Cons: Not very interesting or inspirational – does not give quick fix solutions(if you are looking for one!)
