The Bourne Identity...a masterpiece by Robert Loodlum I think.Ive read it and its 2 sequels. Bourne Supremacy & Bourne Ultimatum. But the first one was the best.
Set against the back ground of 1970s, the story revolves around CIAs attempt at arresting Carlos - the Jackal aka Ilyich Ramirez Sanchez...the world famous assassin of that time. To counter The Jackal, CIA introduced a phoney assassin named Jason Bourne, who took all the claims of Carlos deeds, there by challenging him to come out in the open...so that he can be arrested. As it was belived that Carlos invaded all the secrets in CIA, only a handful of
few comprising of around 5 people inside CIA called the Treadstone group knew about it.In due course of time our hero, Bourne gets a chance to challenge the Jackal on a boat in deep sea, but The Jackal, as shrewd he is, injures him deadly and makes his get away.
From here our story starts in the book, also in the movie. In a part of Europe, a man...our hero Bourne(Matt Damon) is discovered unconscious and deeply injured in the sea.A drunkard doctor tries his best to save him and succeeds. Now our man is saved but he looses his memory as a bullet was embedded in his skull...just milimeters away from killing him. Now what? The man finds out with the help of the doctor, that he can speak 4 different dialects. Can
disassemble a gun skillfully. Knows martial arts, athletic figure. And....hold it...he has got a microfilm implanted in his hips which contains a bank account number in Zurich, the initials J.B. tattoed and evidence that his face is altered by plastic surgery. Whoa. In the bank inside his safety deposit box he finds passports with different identities, money, a gun. And learns his identity: Jason Bourne.
Things seem to come back to him in flashes. But he cant place them. He can recognize people/places and is recognized too.But he cant recall them. When Jason is in the American consulate his passport sets off a DETAIN alarm and he’s chased by the entire security force. He escapes narrowly by climbing down the building’s exterior.
In due course he finds a lady(Franka Potente) named Marie outside the embassy, offering her $10, 000 to help him elude his pursuers and drive him to Paris, where he believes his true identity can be found and makes his escape with her help.
Now when Jason reaches his place in Italy he has got company already.Assasins trying to kill him and cops trying to nab him.Pretty tough eh....
Hold it.
Am not goin to tell any more. As I know the avid fan following this book has got...you guys are gonna see it whatever I tell. Its upto u to see what happnned to Carlos.
Its directed by Doug Liman.
Now, MY COMMENTS on this... I didnt like this movie at all.
First of all, while reading the book, I had imagined Bourne as a somewhat more mature person, who(as the narrative goes) is in his thirties. Now, Matt Damon doesnt fit into this scene at all. It couldve been given more justice if somebody more mature like Bruce Willis or Nicolas Cage or Richard Gere might have acted in it.
Second, the movie has got some modifications over the original story line in the book. But the screenplay moves too fast for you to realize what is happening. Before you could realise what is going on, a second scene is thrust on you.
Plot is not so engrossing, background music ok. Acting is ok. Nothing extraordinary about it and I felt sad seeing such a thing happening to a great book. The movie seems like a disaster. I will recommend you people to read the book again instead of going to watch the movie.
Any way as I said, you people wont stop just reading my comments. So its upto you people to decide.
Afterall, this is a sad ending to such a good story...
