The Queen Of Christian Pop

Genre Christian Pop

Evaluation The first time I ever heard of Amy Grant was a pop song called ’’Baby Baby’’ which was pure commercial pop. I have to admit I loved the song and bought the album which is called ’’Heart In Motion’’. You should pick that one up just to see the range this woman has. I had no idea who Amy Grant was. To me she was just another Madonna or whatever the pop diva of the day was. Then my brother in law gave me a copy of this album on cassette. I was expecting more of the same as in Heart In Motion. You can imagine my surprise when I heard this woman singing about and to the Lord. Well, needless to say I was knocked out. The songs on this album are gorgeous and very deep and profound. You will not find any ’’hits’’ here, so if that’s what you’re looking for then this album is not for you. However if you want to hear some really good music with some real meaning then you have to give this album a listen to. Admittedly it is hard for me to list the hi-lights of this album as there are no songs that really stand out in that way, so what I will do is give you my top 5 favorites and why. You can draw your own conclusion on whether you think this album is for you or not. So here is my top 5.

1) Stay For Awhile Okay, I admit it. This song leans more towards her pop side and honestly I don’t know if she’s singing about the Lord in this one. I haven’t analyzed the lyrics to this song. This is one you pop fiends might actually enjoy a lot. It is very infectious and my favorite pop song on the album. It’s style and sound is similar to Hall and Oates ’’Kiss On My List’’. If you like that one you’ll like this one.

2) Angels An upbeat Christian song about Angels watching over her. This is kind of a cross between pop and Christian. Again I have to admit I am more drawn to the pop side of this song. This could appeal to many tastes.

3) El Shaddai One of the slower songs on the album and not sung in English. I think it’s Hebrew but I’m not really sure. This is just a beautiful song and honestly one of the more unusual songs on the album. Very haunting.

4) In A Little While ’’In a little while we’ll be with the father’’. This song has shades of Air Supply in it’s sound, at least musically. Real easy to listen to and shouldn’t be offensive even to people who don’t like spiritual music.

5) Father’s Eyes This song is real laid back. Sounds like it was written 50 years ago yet is as fresh as today because of Amy’s wonderful delivery. Which brings me to...

Bottom Line: There are few, no, check that, NO singers like Amy Grant. She has a quality and charm and innocence and strength and, well I could go on and on. This is one very versatile singer. If you’ve never experienced her before then this is the album to get. It has a little of everything. The songs I didn’t review are also very good. Again, you won’t find any slam bam hits here except maybe ’’Stay For Awhile’’ comes close. But if you want to experience something truly unique and beautiful then Amy Grant’s ’’Collection’’ has to be on your list of CD’s to get this year. You’ll be glad you did.
