Ok, so I watched The Devil Wears Prada because of the stellar reputation of Meryl Streep and the resounding and seemingly universal bouquets the movie has garnered. But why oh why has this mean-spirited, consistently unfunny, poorly developed film with unresolved subplots received so many good reviews? Streeps plays the editor of Runway Magazine with about as much range as a gnat. As an actor who has consistently delivered stellar performances in the past, one senses that she merely showed up on the set of Devil.
The self-important, puffed up culture portrayed at Runway Magazine permeates the movie itself, however it fails in that the movie is neither important nor successful.
The Devil Wears Prada is not a comedy and it is not a drama. It is a giant, poorly done hour and a half of product placement where one can only guess who was paying whom for the rights to the use of famous brands.
