The Devil Wears Prada...

... and angels wear Chanel? No really, I wouldn’t know about that. But after I read the book (by Lauren Weisberger) a few months ago, I was dying for the movie to hit Indian theaters.

You could say I would have sold my soul to the devil to watch it this weekend, which I managed to do :) And now here I am writing about it. First off, I have to say... the book is better! But then isn’t it always so, be it Bridget Jones’ Diary, The First Wives Club, etc... the book almost always wins over the movie, despite impressive actor line-ups! But unlike some movies, this movie is not a disappointment. Anne Hathaway is very convincing as the gauche Andrea Sachs, while Meryl Streep plays a chilling Miranda Priestly, high priestess of the fashion world, editor-in-chief of Runway magazine... Stanley Tucci plays a very convincing Nigel, he helps take Andy to new fashion heights so she can fit into the Size 0 world of Runway magazine.

Emily Blunt plays Emily, Miranda’s ’First’ assistant, and is convincingly calculating and compentent, with just a touch of warmth! She’ll remind you of all your colleagues who practice the fine art of kissing a certain part of the boss’ anatomy, if you know what I mean. The movie is slightly different from the book... it gives Miranda a human side, totally missing in the book.

There are other differences too, but then when you have to fit an entire book into a 109 minute movie, that’s bound to happen! You may be interested to know that the book (and so the movie) is rumoured to be based on the author’s real-life... her nightmarish experience working at Vogue magazine. Miranda Priestley’s character is based on Vogue’s editor Anna Wintour - the original boss from hell, apparently. Anyway, if you haven’t read the book yet, I’d suggest go watch the movie first, it’ll be a lot more fun, read the book later! And I’ll end with a quote from my favorite vamp (for now) Miranda Priestly "That’s all."
