The first time I saw those pink newspaper (very early in my life), I thought how could one read those news items dotted with incomprehensive terms and irritating figures and details. I knew that these scary looking newspapers can never be my cup of tea.
However, that wasnt to be. One day I mustered enough courage to pick one of them from my school library to see wat purpose do they exactly serve.
With a little apprehension I started flippin through the pages of this newspaper called Economics Times and though I failed to understand most of headlines of the stories, except for few new product launches. And believe me I got interested in knowing more about new products being launched and MNCs setting up their shops in India.
Although those were early days of liberalisation, and foreign companies were still apprehensive about indias credentials, this newspaper (ET) still had enough to keep me interested in its ugly looking pages.
Then came Times groups move to `paint a rosy picture of the newspaper industry. And hence came those coloured pages, sleek looks and a more concerted effort by it to make the newspaper more readable by masses. And those changes were evident in ET also. By then I had discovered my fondness to know more about the economy rather then just product launches, M&As and new investment plans of some big names.
Today Im a big believer that for a starter, ET is the best business newspaper. It not only has shed its scary and scholastic look but also made the news items more easy to understand.
In comparison to other pink newspapers in India, ET stands apart just because it doesnt try to look esoteric and elitist but it tries to be a newspaper for all.
