The Finest Hours is an old-school drama that uses new-age special effects well to narrate its inspirational tale. The film could have done with more thrills, given the daring operation it lays out as its plot. It needed a more cohesive narration. Gillespie could have also avoided his slant at resorting to cliches while setting up the story and characters.
