Can a cute little girl, James Bond, a beautiful young lady, a giant polar bear and a **Golden Compass** make a film interesting? Yes, if you see them as individual entities but not as a part of the script. The Golden Compass is an adaptation of the novel **Northern Lights** by **Phillip Pullman**, is a fantasy film.
Coming to the adaptaion, the film is about the life in a parallel universe where the soul of a person lives outside in the form of an animal called **Daemon**. Lyra the cute little girl is an orphan who has a uncle **Lord Asriel(Daniel Craig)** who takes care of her. A group of people headed by the beautiful lady **Marisa Coulter(Nicole Kidman)** try to kidnapp the children and then to take control of their Daemon. Lyra gets a gift, an Alitheometer which speaks of truth. This is called The Golden Compass. She is mislead by this group as her uncle leaves to the north pole in an experimental expedition. She\ along with the help of the compass, a few gypsyes, an aeronut and a polar bear finds out the chidren.
Though the film has some quite spectacular works of computer graphics and locations, it has no feel which is why you will fail to get connected at all. Nicole Kidman as Marisa Coulter is pretty mediocre in her acting. The appearance of Daniel Craig sums up to nothing, where he has very limited part in the script. The film is quite slow and the only few editions in the second half are, a gaint polar bear and the aeronut played by Sam Elliot. Eva Green also has some guest appearance in the film. The film was one of the most highly aspired one by New Line Cinema which invested$ 180 million. It will be an ordinary film for those who are used to watch films with CG effects.
The only credit it got is an Oscar and a BAFTA for the computer graphics. The background score as well is not interesting.
Overall its a film which can be avaoided, but you can watch it, if you want to verify my review.
