I have spent the best part of my days on MS tearing apart Ekta Kapoor?s serials and the channel which subscribed to the mindless concepts she dished out in the name of entertainment. Countless letters to various media channels, like Mid Day elicited no reply or even subscription to my ideas about Star and Ekta Kapoor, and one fine day, I find that Mid Day has dedicated a whole part of it?s list to the K! More about that later.
Within that time, I heard about this new channel, Star One, and I swore at the so called entertainment pundits who I thought were about to unleash another nuclear bomb on intelligent minds. And was I pleasantly surprised! I haven?t seen much of the channel, Star One, but there is this serial on the channel which absolutely rocks. The concept is nothing new. It is a direct take off on Shekar Suman?s Movers and Shakers. The same concept and premise.
The serial is aptly named The Great Indian Comedy Show. The difference being, in the product. What does Sameer Menon ( The host) actually rip apart? Yes, guys and gals, you heard it right the first time, Ekta Kapoor?s shows on Star Plus! Simply put, the character/humorous actors of various movies (Style, Jassi Jaise Koi Nahin, Tumsa Nahin Dekha) are put together to rant rave and murder all the serials on Star Plus. The weaponry is pretty simple too. Intelligent dialogues, creative ideas and outstanding comic timing from the comic veterans.
It actually reminds you of the over the top humorous comedy skits one had on Doordarshan on a shoe string budget, with cardboard backgrounds, single costume episodes and whatnot. The excitement of running a stage show, on TV! I actually think that the Moguls have understood that they burnt their fingers with the K serials and they FINALLY understand that there is a intelligentsia in the Indian population too!
This is a sincere request to all my fellow MSers who have even thought once that K serials are a assault to the senses. WATCH THIS SERIAL! IT?S THE ONLY THING THAT CAN BRING AROUND A REVOLUTION IN INDIAN TELEVISION! WATCH IT! IT AIRS AT NINE IN THE NIGHT ON SATURDAYS! PARTY AFTER NINE THIRTY! BUT WATCH IT!
