The killer has enough plot twists and turns to keep the audience on the edge. An above average thriller, but most notable for Irfaans revelation of another string to his acting bow.The film is definitely worth the price of admission , if nothing more!
Emraan is a hard-working cabbie in Dubai. He picks up a beautiful girl [Nisha] and they fall in love.We learn early on that he knows exactly how many minutes it will take to get from one location to the next
But Emraans fate takes a major twist when he picks up Irfaan, a somewhat psycho character who offers Emraan 2000$ to ferry him to five different stops over the course of the Night to conduct business before dropping him off at the airport in the early morning hours. Emraan is reluctant, but Irfaan wont take no for an answer, and so Emraan agrees, discovering shortly and shockingly what Irfaans business actually is: he is a contract killer, in town for one night to eliminate five witnesses against arrest of a don.
With his secret revealed, Irfaan forces Emraan to continue their journey .As the movie builds to a climax , the police are hunting for Emraan, believing he is the one on a killing spree to a backdrop of the brilliant Dubai skyline, reflected in multiplicity....
The film starts off low key, and continues for the majority. Despite Irfaan being a cold hired killer, his demeanour and relaxed, open attitude makes you feel that hes not that dangerous after all. At some point along the way I started wondering where this was going, I knew he can play a great bad guy, but he wasnt really playing much at all, just any other character. Then I caught some of the subtleties of the character and the way he was calming and controlling Emraan. What was then interesting was where it went from there, where the story kicked off into high gear and the characters changed under the pressure of the night.
Most of the film takes place in and around the cab, but this scene is hardly limiting, as it affords Maker the opportunity to exploit the beauty of Dubai at night, using aerial shots and sweeping vistas of the city.
There are a few minor plot points which didnt sufficiently suspend my disbelief like when Emraan agrees to take Irfaan to see his Mother in the hospital. Also the ending is clichéd and silly. Inevitably, the protagonist survives and gets the girl. And the killer is no different. But overall this is a good movie.
Irfaan, Emraan, and Nisha all rise to the occasion in The killer, and together they transcend their previous appearances on film.Though Irfaan is clearly the star of the film, Emraan is really its hero, an average Joe thrown into an incredibly frightening and unlikely scenario who manages to work through his fear and passivity to match wits with Irfaan.
Worth a ride!
