The American ambassador to Britain and is wife have a son who is actually the anti Christ. He is not their own son but adopted at birth. This son who is called Damien (Demon) never falls sick. Animals are afraid of him except dogs. He is afraid to go to the church. Damien’s nanny commits suicide in a party. It seems she was hypnotised by a sinister dog sitting at a distant. A new nanny soon is brought, who happens to be the guardian of the satanic child Damien. Strange ominous incidents keep on happening right from the death of the ambassador in an accident, the priest who is killed in front of the church, Damien’s mother and the photographer. The Omen is a carbon copy of the 1976 version. There are some foggy areas. Damien was very different from a child , why was he not taken to a Psychiatrist? Why did he wait for so long to kill his parents? Did he wait till they found out? Why did he attack his mother on the way to the church…why not his father? Why did they employ the nanny without enquiring much (Damien was the ambassador’s son)? Why was the photographer so keen on cracking the mystery? The entire journey of finding Damien’s true identity. The original movie was disturbing, the new version seems a bit soul less. But then its better than the gory sci fi techno horror flicks. The editing and the occasional shocks like the one of the dogs in the cemetery will take you suddenly as it is meant to be. Rachel Weiz was supposed to act as Damien’s mother. Her absence because of her pregnancy robs the movie of some charm. Gregory Peck as the father in the old version becomes conspicuous with his absence(Why should I expect). I would like to quote from someone about the new movie: “It has its moments, and isnt that terrible, but theres an annoying distance, or separation between the subject matter and the film. Its too clean, too polished... it just isnt evil enough.” By the way the murder of Damien’s mother is doubtful. A fatal fall does not kill her and a mere push of air in the veins do. Believe me if people died due to air bubble in veins during IV then I would have been dead by now. Sometimes you may feel that it’s just a set of unfortunate coincidences which has been mystically interpreted. I wish they made the movie to give a feel like that, rather than spilling the beans too soon.
