I visited this unique fine dining restaurant with my family for dinner on the 2nd of January 2015. What really amazed me was the very different menu and decor in this place. Located on the back-side of the Express Towers skyscraper at Nariman Point, The Sassy Spoon is not an original name as there are similarly named eateries in some other places in the world.
They have an unique two-tiered booking of tables, the first ones at about 8 p.m. and the second slot at 10 p.m. In this way. they make sure that there are tables for everyone, and no one has to wait to be seated. Managed by a young man, the chefs are Rachel Goenka(probably related to the Indian Express owners, the famed Goenkas) and Irfan. Between them, they have created a fascinating mixed menu with Indian, Continental, American and other kinds of cuisine.
We started off with mocktails for the girls(one had A Berry Kala-khatta, while the other had an unlisted but delicious Citrus drink. My better half and I shared their excellent creamy tomato soup with Basil, Parmesan, Pepper and Olives. For starters, we ordered their Harissa-spiced grilled chicken with a yoghurt dip and their smoked lamb galouti kababs, both very good to taste. For the mains, we took their Brown Rice Paella with broad beans, their spiced baby lamb legs with roasted cauliflower and their Tamarind and chilli spiced Rawas fish wrapped in banana leaf and their coconut rice. Finally, we topped it off with an unique dessert of a Tiramisu cake with "home-made ladyfingers" - absolutely delightful.
The decor and ambience are great; there was an entire wall with antique luggage bags of assorted shapes and sizes fitted into a specially designed frame from floor to ceiling. The service was surprisingly quick and the servers were courteous, knew their dishes well, and cooperated with us all the way. On our way out, they even made a small hamper of mouth-freshening tidbits and handed it to my daughter with a briliant smile.
All in all, a great experience, although food is costly here. Our bill crossed 5500 for 4 adults without hard drinks.
