Times of India - Marketing success of trash

Hi. I had read a rather intresting review on TOI. While the reviwer gave the thumbs down to TOI, she still said that she would read it daily in the morning. And therein, my friends, lies the victory of TOI.

Yes, I agree that TOI is an extention of Page 3 plus parketing gimmicks. News that isn’t sales worthy hardly appears. If you want hard core journalism, perhaps you should read the Indian Express.

But that said, TOI is still successful because reading is a habit and also becoz they have clearly understood that we less mortals dont have the time to read lengthy pieces of investigative journalism, which we rather watch on NDTV / Star News while having dinner. Isnt it true that after all the bicthing we do on TOI, we still buy it and read?? And the promoters laugh all the way to the bank!

Do we really care about people oriented stories? Or are we happy reading the trash that TOI puts out for the ’’market’’ savvy?? I guess TOI is a reflection of our ’’dont care’’ attitudes about issues that we cant change. We rather be happy by ignoring the plight of riot victims and read stuff about who wore what for yesterdays party! TOI is trash. But I guess trash sells. Ask the advertisers and the ad agencies!! Sad, isnt it?
