A TOI a day does NOT keep ads away.

Basically, I have three problems with this brand of news paper.

  1. Campaigns are more important than news- no doubt the sexual assault in Delhi was the most unfortunate of last year’s incidents, a very serious crime with no room for mercy. But to make a whole campaign out of it and to devote 2 sides of news space to that campaign is a bit too much. Similarly, the war on terror thing was also taken a tad too far post 26/11. Even while reporting budgets, the news paper pays more attention to the graphics and imaging and not to the content. This is unacceptable, ditto for its electronic partners Times Now and Radio Mirchi. they too over indulge in these campaigns.

  2. Adjectives- nearly every incident is reported with an adjective, which is unacceptable. Whether the rape is gruesome is for the police to decide. Whether the scam is gigantic is again for the investigators to decide. Whether the speech is a’hate speech’ is again for the designated observers to decide. the newspaper’s job is to report the incident in a manner as emotionally detached as possible.

  3. Too many ads- the only newspaper I’ve seen which ads pages full of adds to its cover age. NOT ACCEPTABLE AT ALL.

That says, I like the newspaper for its broad coverage, highly placed sources and breaking reliable news. It also has good editorials but does not disclose the names in some of these.
