Some General Informations about TSUNAMI

This review is mostly written for the people who want some information about TSUNAMI. I know that most of the people know these facts but still I tried to add some of mine information(remember its just copy paste from different www?s).

What is TSUNAMI?

A tsunami(pronounced soo-NAH-mee), loosely referred to as, but technically not, a tidal wave, is a series of waves(called a’wave train’) generated in a body of water by a pulsating or abrupt disturbance that vertically displaces the water column. Earthquakes, landslides, volcanic eruptions, explosions, and the impact of extraterrestrial bodies such as meteorites, can generate tsunamis. Tsunamis can savagely attack coastlines, causing devastating property damage, injuries, and loss of life due to injuries or drowning.

The term’tsunami’ comes from the Japanese language meaning harbor(’tsu’) and wave(’nami’). The term is pronounced tsoo-NAA-mee. The term was created by fishermen who returned to port to find the area surrounding the harbor devastated, although they hadn’t been aware of any wave in the open water.

Causes:

A tsunami can be generated by any disturbance that displaces a large mass of water, such as an earthquake, landslide or meteor impact.

History

Although tsunamis occur most frequently in the Pacific Ocean, they are known to occur anywhere. Many ancient descriptions of sudden and catastrophic waves exist, particularly in and around the Mediterranean. A large percentage of world cultures share the legend of a Great Deluge or Flood, which may have been inspired by oral histories of real-life tsunamis.
