Victoria Tramcar - Restaurant on Wheels

  • I shall sue you. Yes I will, said the elderly man.

Both my friend and I felt bad looking at the elderly man, profusely sweating in the afternoon heat. It was 3 pm and we were so hungry.ready to hog on anything.

  • Request you to have a seat here uncle, I said. Pointing my finger to the other side of the table.

  • Auntie, please join us, said my friend. They were angry as they could not find a table for the family.

We were at Victoria Restaurant. The new tramcar restaurant that Kolkata - The City of Joy offers. Kolkata has been the first city to host tramcars in Asia. In 1902, the 1st tramcar in Kolkata run between Esplanade to Khidirpore. This restaurant on wheel will follow the same route. As the tramcar started from Shahid Minar(Esplanade) we were served Posto Bora(poppy seeds chunks) and chicken pakora. Slowly, the tramcar passed Victoria Memorial, Maidan and Race Course and all the members were now enjoying Moong Daal and jhuri aloo bhaja (Crispy potato fry).

The elderly couple from Puna said that they also have similar type of crispy aloo fry named as Selli. While they were sitting with us, their son, daughter in law and grandson managed themselves in another table.

The interior looked awesome. The paintings and murals and the curtains evokes essence of Eastern India.

Soon, we entered Khidirpore - where Wajid Ali Shah, the last Nawab of Lakhnow spent his last days in exile. This is also an important dock. The area is a bit conjusted though. The tramcar stopped for around 15 munutes at Khidirpore bus station and the main course is served. Pulao, Prawn malaikari and mutton curry. Then chatney and papad. The tramcar again stared for its origin station while we enjoyed misti doi(sweet curd) and rasogolla. As we were crossing Maidan again amidst lush greenery, Kolkata looked beautiful.

Timings: The tramcar runs in weekends and usually there are 4 trips. 12pm-2pm; 2pm-4pm; 4pm-6pm and 6pm-8pm.

Price: Veg platter - rs.799; non-veg platter - rs. 999

Pros: Tasty food; Nice interior; Well behaved staff

Cons: If you are a group of odd numbers, you have to share your table with others   (tables are for 2/4), the starting point does not have proper display and its confusing, you have to call for booking, online booking is not possible.
