Long back when I was studying motivation chapter as management student, number of motivational factors were given in the chapter and money was one of the primary and most essential factor, leading human being specially an employee to high degree of productivity. But when I entered in a company as part of the lower management, I found that our employees were most frustrated on this point i.e. motivation thru money. Low salaries, long working hours and inhuman treatment meted by our supervisors. Perhaps they were taught in the same way and they were unaware and unconcerned about the company’s future. Many of the companies gone to lock up stage due to employee’s dissatisfaction, strike, leading to production loss, unrest and always bad relationship with each other and management in particular. Many a good employees were leaving company and it appeared that high egoist approach of the supervisors and junior managers were responsible. In fact they were driving away good employees from company, wasting lot of funds spent for recruitment.
Here few months’ back I met Rajiv student of IIM, Indore who told us that they were getting Rs.10000- per week and we were asked to spent as they wish. They were asked to live lavishly and should be happy person in the campus. We analyzed at our end that those students, who had come from different family backgrounds were streamlined in management art. They were being getting training to be such a manager who should let employees work in a most favorable productive environment, with out tension and future worries regarding their career and betterment in the company.
Mayur Sharma got his present employment in one of the associate of MNC. He is very much aware of his entitlements If he spends more or less, his company has nothing to do with this, but to pay as per his entitlement. But in some genuine cases, special consideration is always done. One day he got an e mail through which he was asked to submit his conveyance/traveling claims on line. Just feed some of the desired information and click enter. This will reach to the checking and recommending authority in the company Head Office, New Delhi for recommendation on line too. The Allowing Authority used to get the recommended claim on line for clicking yes for payment/credit in the salary account of the employee The thought behind this was a speedy clearance of the claims on line and leaving employees tension free regarding their claims. Company’s approach was that employees should work smoothly with high degree of work performance and for rest company will take care of their employees.
I do remember in my times. When employees on tour were most of the time were busy in calculating to meet some how their cigarette, food, break fast and some saving out of their DA. And to get this done they were showing false local conveyance trips or manipulating in Hotel Bill, requesting for giving them low rent accommodation and charge their full entitlement in the bill. So in this way saving. But who will say up to what level they were productive and honest and this was their management who was compelling them to be dishonest. If an employee on tour iis always thinking such manipulation, forgery, can be productive?
Now the management of the modern age when started paperless work and use of internet was on high esteem, first of all thought to get relieved their employees of any guilt of manipulations. Now they insist on result and not screen their bill thru Eagle’s eyes. They were always aware that if the employee is underpaid, he will only think of his family’s financial need and would try to get some relief thru his claims. One of the employee once informed me that when he returns home from tour, his wife simply asks him, how much he has saved in this tour. So if an employee is in this weak financial status at home, can not be mentally prepared to show himself very satisfied productive and good representative of his company before others, when he is on business trips.
Now let’s take another example of health security. Normally an employee can not afford lots of questions when General Assurance Companies ask, for settlement of his claim. Now the companies offer group health insurance cover to their employees. An employee has to reach the hospital and show his health card, and now hospital will do his total cure/treatment.
** ****At last I want to conclude that we should make them feel productive and emotionally attached with their employer. They should have a feeling that their contribution has been taken care of
