Resume Writing - An Art

Creating a brand Identity for yourself.

We never get a second chance to make a first impression. Usually the prospective employer gets lots & lots (may be hundreds) of resumes, and unless we are able to rent a space in their mind, it doesn’t matter how well qualified we are for that job. A resume is what makes you or breaks you. That great is the importance of a resume.

Resume is like a marketing brochure highlighting our skills & potential, to help the recruiter decide how we can contribute to the job. An effective resume just helps us to enter the doorstep of the recruiter maybe till the interview level. 80% of the recruiter’s time & effort are spent on the first page of the resume & only small glances are made on the second page of the resume. A resume should ideally be not more than two pages. A resume is just like a suitcase, one must always travel light. It must not be loaded with lots of information. There are will be time in the interview to flush out information on personal strengths & weaknesses. A good resume is always brief and concise.

It is important to focus on the needs of the recruiter.

Most often a recruiter wants the job seeker to:

1.Address the needs & priorities of the recruiter.

2.Does not want his patience to be tested.

3.Information should be short & precise. Resume in a bulleted format helps the employer to scan quickly through the resume.

A brief structure of a resume:

·A resume should begin with the name and contact details.

·It should be followed by a summary of your skills, experience and how best suited you are for the job in question.

·Work experience should be given in the chronological order i.e. begin with your current assignment…It is vital to mention your Job description and key responsibilities areas for each job. Highlighting the key result area/key achievements is very important.

·Any seminar or training program attended should also be mentioned along with how it has helped you to grow further in your career.

·This should be followed by outlining your educational qualifications. Its important to mention the name of the institute, year of passing out and passing grade/percentage.

Lets all make an effort to design an effective and powerful resume to fetch the most desired job in town.
