Hmmm, name brand or generic?

Did you ever wonder why Tylenol costs$7.99 for a bottle of 50 caplets(500mg) and you can go into the dollar store and purchase 50 caplets of acetamenophen(500mg) for$1.00?

How about$5.79 for a bottle of Robitussin DM cough syrup and$2.09 for the store brand?

Think about it.

The name brand advertises.  The name brands spend millions of dollars every year on advertising on television and in magazines and newspapers.  While the generic or store brands do no advertising at all and depend on people to read the active ingredients in their product against the highly advertised one.

I read the ingredients and expiration dates, compare the prices and 99% of the time, I wind up with either generic or store brand.

Bear in mind that I am talking about over the counter, non prescription medications.

Allergy pills, cough medicine, headache pills, acid pills, etc.

I asked my Doctor about the difference and he said, ’price’.  He told me that as long as the generic or store brand have the same active ingredient, in the same dosage, go for the less expensive one!

The active ingredient is the only ingredient that matters.  All the other ingredients which are added are usually for color or flavor.

I tried a sneaky little switch on my boyfriend, who, for a headache will only take Aleve because, ’That generic stuff never works, it’s not the same.’  I switched his Aleve for 2 store brand ibuprophen tablets.  And, isn’t it strange, his headache subsided within 30 minutes, just like with his Aleve!  He’s now a believer in generic and store brand too.

So remember, when buying over the counter medication, don’t run out and buy a name brand because the television tells you to.  Check ingredients and dosage and save yourself money by’going generic or store brand!’
