The Good, The Bad And The Ugly

I started putting petrol into my vehicle since I was 15 and then it was 15 Rupees, Things have gone bizarre after then and looks like I have to double my age to catch it now. With petrol rocketing and pockets not bulging proportionately, there is a certain need to look for alternative fuel, in our case LPG.

Since this discussion is focussed on the pockets let’s Calculate and find out if LPG is really worth, ppl with faint hearts, close your eyes or skip content between stars

1 litre of gas weighs 500gms and 1 litre of petrol is 702gms.  Current price of gas is Rs25.02, So, 702*25.02/500= Rs35.12.

Did I say that gas has the same calorific value of petrol? The energy in 1Kg of LPG is 47311KJ where as 1Kg of petrol equals 44799KJ. So, 44799*35.12/47311= Rs33.25.

Thats the final price considering all the sick stuff of calorific values, weights and volumes.

Please do not tell me that I’ve screwed up the calculations, I hate math as much as many and at times more than many. But, I think I got it right this time.

The bottom line is LPG is cheaper by 32%. Sounds interesting on paper, doesn’t it? Why does petrol win in the real world then? I can smell that car manufacturers are habituated to making their cars drink petrol. As of now, Maruti Omni is the only vehicle that comes with a factory fitted LPG.

Let’s get to the kits then, buying an LPG kit is like adding a new family member, It shortens your space and you car will carry a kid’s weight more, bad for you’LPG kit dosen’t go to school either’. More weight means hike’Rs33.25’ but thats not the main problem either. The fitting process as I have witnessed is the most cumbersome, If you are buying one for your car, stay away from it when they do it, its so disheartening, they drill, splice, cut. and perform all the destructive methods known to man. Not a problem if you see a car as a piece of painted metal but hurts if you are a lover.

Most of these fittings are too general, you get the same kits for 1.3l and 1.4l engines, and maybe they can fit the same thing to 1.8l engines as well. Looks like they’ve copied the platform independence of java, they are good at IT. So, Performance’ will always be a distant word, but who would add weight to a car if they wanted it to’Perform’.

What to say about mileage? It will be acceptable if the Choice of the Kit, The quality of fitment, The Calibration.and the rest of the one million things involved work right.

On the upside there is very little chance for contamination, it will be cleaner, its got more octane number and it pollutes less, it is definitely the fuel for you if you are an environmentalist.

Performance enthusiasts stick to petrol or switch to LPG and stick a green triangular sticker that says’BOMB’. Yeah, they say that it is safe, the tank is that thick, it is filled to only about 80%, it drains off in case of a leakage. Believing them is as good as buying a ticket to Heaven.

Hahahaha, things could be better if some of the above mentioned issues are addressed, specially those related to Fitment.’Perfection’ does take time if the’Desire’ is there, and’Desire’ does start when ppl say’We Need’.’Quality, Compatibility’ are always words owned by the industry and lets pray that Car Manufacturers look forward to make cars run on LPG. Only then can we see the real’Rs33.25’ working out.

This is me Signing off from Heaven, guess what I used to put into my car. Hahahaha.

Have fun and have a nice day,

(They don’t allow Names in Heaven).

-/-/-/-My next topic will be on’Alternate Energies’, since it will not carry any immediate practical purposes, I will be producing it to you in the most hilarious way possible, be sure to read that one.-/-/-/-
